I have a fusion drive on my 3 year old iMac and my next one isn't going to have one. Statistically it's a much higher risk for data loss as you have to add the crash risk of a ssd and the hdd together. Unfortunately if either fail it's a 100% loss. It's a money saving move, but honestly you'd be better served with a 256gb internal ssd and a 2-4TB USB 3.0 HDD

You can create your own fusion drive anyway with a little terminal googling
 
Many Thanks for all the really helpful replies. In the UK the 2tb fusion iMac and 512gb ssd iMac are the same price £1849. I'm going to buy the 512gb ssd iMac now and add a 4TB for back up (Time Machine) and another 2TB HDD for and music/photo (large file) storage
