I have to agree because i was gonna be sucked in by it but i have thought is it really worth another £196? If there is no real difference between th 2.0 and 2.4 i think ill be going with the 2.0 i can always upgrade HDD in the future and also buy an external one.

Talking about external HDD, if i put windows on that could u use bootcamp and run windows off the external one or not? Also i know there i the new OS coming out soon snow Leopard, will there be a much of a difference do you think between that and the current os Leopard? Was there a big differnce between Leopard and the previous os? Im just asking becasue i dont think i can wait until September for new models to come out. What you guys think?
booting windows from an external drive will be extremly slow if possible at all

...So my question is, should I drop an extra $400 or so to go for the 15 inch MBP, or go the less expensive route and opt for the higher end MacBook?...

...Now that I'll be a poor college student again, maybe I can put that extra $400 towards, oh I don't know, food and/or electricity...

...Better off selling the iMac and buying a decent monitor, IMO.

...it sounds like money is a concern while going back to school... keep the iMac and get yourself a netbook like the Asus eeePC1000HE to carry to classes = much less of an investment if it gets damaged AND its lighter with longer battery life...

I believe that the 2.4GHz model is one of the worst value notebooks on the market from any company today. People who buy it are sucked in by the backlit keyboard (Apple is well known for using cheap tricks like this to encourage buyers to pay more for very little extra, for further evidence see the case of Combo Drives) but how many of them actually ever use their machines when there is no other light source available?

Are you saying an illuminated keyboard isn't worth $182?

The backlit keyboard was the reason I opted for the 2.4GHz, and I am completely happy that I got it. My Blackbook was a major pain to use in low light conditions.

personally, i'd get a Mac Pro (only machine from apple worth buying IMO). But since you need a laptop and want portability, I'd get a macbook, though I'd wait to see if apple improves the hideous screens on them...

what do you mean by hideous screens?

the displays on the macbooks are horrible and have hideous picture quality and horrible viewing angles

Yeah, they really are bottom of the barrel components. When I'm looking at mine there is a noticeable difference in colour between the top and bottom of the display and moving to either side results in hideous colour changes.

There are also major issues with the batteries in the new MacBooks. They simply don't last as long as the old machines and there is no way you will get anywhere close to the 5 hours Apple advertises. They state that this is possible with WiFi on but I am lucky to get two and a half hours on mine.

When i been to see one in my local PC World the screen look quite good to me, but then again i am using a 3 year old windows notebook LOL.

The problem with the MBP is that its so big... the keyboard area just looks strange with all that space, its ugly IMHO. If i bought the MB 13.3" could i upgrade the ram in it? If so how much am i looking at ram to upgrade to 4gb? from the apple site, when customizing it, it would cost me another £80.

Really? I have a 2.4 Aluminum MB, and have had it since October. I use it all the time. The screen is phenomenal, and the battery life is outstanding, especially considering i use it without being plugged in a lot. I still get 4, sometimes 5 hours with it, and this is while using wi-fi.

Sounds like you are pretty sold on the MB. You won't be disappointed! To me the 2" of extra screen space was worth it. I didn't know how much I would need the backlit keyboard but after having it I would really miss it if I went with anything else.

I also don't think the Unibody MB's screens look bad at all. I thought they were pretty nice actually. I do think that the Plastic MB screen is not as nice though.

Sounds like you are pretty sold on the MB.

I'm not really sold on anything yet, but I appreciate everyone's comments and the debate. I used a MBP over the weekend at a friend's house and really liked it. The refurb for $1,699 is tempting...

Normally I would say heck yeah for a refurb, but apple secretly went with new screens during the past couple of months on the macbooks. The new screens are supposed to have the same contrast quality and viewing angles as the ones on mbp's.

If there was a choice between getting a refurbed 2.4 with the old screen and a new 2.0 with the new one for the same price, I'd get the new one.

i think the 2.0 alum MB is fine for your needs. forget the 2.4 gimmick w/the keyboard - use the $300+ saved to max the ram, and a backup hdd for your laptop, or a small printer for school.

speakers on ALL laptops are crap, i don't care who makes them.

I think im with you on this one. Thats what im going to get- a Alu 2.0 Macbook and upgrade the ram to 4gb. the .04 improvment you probably wouldnt realize it and blacklight keyboard is just gimmick. I dont have one now so why will i need one?

i think im sold on the macbook.. now to find the best time to buy:rolleyes:

Another thing i dont fully understand yet is the apple care.. what is it and what do you get for £195 (from apple) is it just and extended warrenty for the machine.. what does it cover and what doesn't? Does it include accidental cover.. if not is there any way?

Thanks :D

adding to my post above ive made my mind up to dump windows and move to mac - an Aluminum MacBook 2.0. But i have a question regarding purchasing from a Apple Store.

I know online when you buy the Macbook but you can upgrade it eg add more ram and bigger HDD.. is that possible in a apple store?

Thanks :)
