Well, this has been a complete disaster. I went from having a machine that had kernel panics five to ten times a week to one that now has many, to the point where the machine become unusable. So, from useable machine to unusable machine. Plus, I spent the better part of two days making the disaster happen; all by myself.

Here's todays panic count and it's not even noon yet:

Kernel-2022-07-04-043549.panic
Kernel-2022-07-04-063322.panic
Kernel-2022-07-04-093528.panic
Kernel-2022-07-04-093902.panic
Kernel-2022-07-04-101554.panic
Kernel-2022-07-04-101755.panic

Sometimes when it reboots, there is no menu bar and it is impossible to enter text. The keyboard works, but you can't enter text into any app. The only solution is to reboot using the power button. (Of course, those many reboots don't show up as kernel panics.)

So, I guess my decision has been made: buy a new machine

I'm glad it worked for you @rovostrov, but it has been a major mess for me.
Hate to hear that didn't work out for you. Did you wipe and install a fresh copy without using migration assistant? Just curious. I installed the new OS using the USB method instead of internet recovery and it worked great for me. In your case, it could be hardware related. Perhaps you might try installing a different OS other than Monterey. Not sure if it's been fixed but I remember reading there were several problems with this release, including migration

I used recovery to reinstall the OS and Migration Assistant to restore.

Just curious: If you didn't use Migration Assistant, what criteria did you use to decide whether or not it was safe to manually move a file from your backup to your newly formatted boot drive?

After I installed the fresh OS, I hooked up my superduper backup drive and then copied the contents of my documents folder from my backup to my macbook's documents foleder. Then did the same and replaced my photo and music libraries. I then downloaded the apps I needed from the app store. After all was done, I tweaked my system and user preferences. The whole process took less than a day, including transfer time. One good way to tell if your problem is hardware related is to try installing without migration and see if you have any more panics. I would try another OS besides Monterey since that one seems to be problematic. If you would like to try the USB install, here is a link to other MacOS you can download directly from Apple. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 I used a program called install disk creator to make a bootable USB https://macdaddy.io/install-disk-creator/
Hopefully, your problem isn't hardware related. I know how frustrating it is when things just wont work as they should.
I'd definitely give it a shot before I bought a new system. Good luck and hopefully things will go smooth.

Thanks for the links. The problem I have with manual migration is that it would take me forever. In my case it's not just a matter of documents and libraries and apps from the App Store (just that would be very time consuming). I won't go in to detail, but I've got lots of binaries installed via MacPorts, many non-App Store programs and data stored in places other than my home directory. Sorting all that out would be a monumental task.

Another thought. If the kernel panics settle down to just a few per week, it's less time consuming to put up with them (three or four minutes of down time per panic) then it would be to go through the whole wipe-reinstall-restore routine. That consumed my machine for nearly 24 hours this weekend. That's the time equivalent of 480 kernel panics.

I can put up with a few panics per week until it's time for a new machine.

One other thought: When I ran MemTest86 it was from a bootable USB stick. It booted in to what I recall was a stripped down version of Linux. That put a lot of stress on both the processor and RAM (but not IO). There was no kernel panic during the 3+ hours that the test ran. That might be an indication that it's not a hardware issue.

Yes, that is a good sign! Maybe it's something that can be fixed without having to purchase a new system. I wish I had more I could share but it looks like my system is pretty basic compared to what you need from yours.

I'm out of ideas on how to find that something.

The good news is that in the panics have reduced in frequency. One yesterday afternoon while I was baking bread and two just after midnight last night while I was asleep. So, none of the three had any effect on my use of the machine. That I can handle.

I was hoping that the 12.5 update might fix the panics. Nope:

The update reboot was at 2022-07-21 06:03:41

And then this:

Kernel-2022-07-21-060717.panic
Kernel-2022-07-21-061451.panic

So, two within about ten minutes of installing the update.

I've suggested before that I would erase the drive and reinstall the OS (USB method) without migrating. If the panics continue, you probably have hardware issues and will need a new system. If they stop, then you know you are migrating something that is causing the panics. Worst case is you buy a new system, migrate your data and still have panics. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do. You probably already know this but migration assistant does not have to be used in the initial setup, you can run it at a later time if you decide to go that route.

Maybe it's time to start thinking outside the box. Do you have anything nearby that may be outputting a strong electro-magnetic field? That is, when you disconnected the peripherals, did you also unplug them from any power source and move them away from the Mac?

And what are the chances of, instead of you curating the logs, just zipping up three or four of them and posting them here? Also, if you've run Etrecheck, doing the same with what it reports?

There is no strong electromagnetic emitter in our house, except for a microwave in the kitchen. The only peripherals I have that connect to power are a monitor and one spinning hard drive. I did not disconnect them from power when I removed them.

The three recent panic reports are attached as a single ZIP file.

I will download the latest EtreCheck, run it and post the results.

I've continued to read as much as I can about kernel panics and found a couple of instances where BlueTooth was the culprit. I have now turned BlueTooth off and connected a wired keyboard and mouse. No panics since. But, in the past I've gone as long as ten days without a panic before they started up again.

Within seconds of me posting that there was another kernel panic. So, it's not BlueTooth.

End of report

I've suggested before that I would erase the drive and reinstall the OS (USB method) without migrating. If the panics continue, you probably have hardware issues and will need a new system. If they stop, then you know you are migrating something that is causing the panics. Worst case is you buy a new system, migrate your data and still have panics. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do. You probably already know this but migration assistant does not have to be used in the initial setup, you can run it at a later time if you decide to go that route.
I understand. I'm just not sure that it would accomplish anything. What is it that Migration Assistant copies that might be causing a kernel panic?

I've already shown (at least to myself) that the machine still panics when no user software is running and that the machine still panics when no non-apple extensions are loaded/running. So, it should be safe for Migration Assistant to copy applications and their preferences. The only thing left is data. I can't see how data files could cause a panic.

I'm certainly willing to listen to specifics on what damage Migration Assistant might do.

As you suggested I posted the raw kernel panic reports and the EtreCheck report.

Do you have any insights or suggestions?

So, nothing to be learned from what I posted?

Gee, I went six days without a panic, and then:

Best to lend or give the computer to someone with troubleshooting skills .... make a full backup and migrate to a new machine first ....
