looking at the configuration options on an iMac, the standard graphics chip on the 24" model is the ATI Radeon 256mb, however there is also an option to upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS/512mb ...im not too knowledgeable on graphics chips, for the average user is it a necessary upgrade? ...what type of tasks would benefit from this additional capability?

It mostly benefits games (and then mostly Windows games played using Bootcamp).

The Apple Pro line of applications are said by many to work better with the ATI card.
