If you are coming from an iPad 4 (which by the way seems more and more laggy everyday), would you notice a big difference if upgrading to the Air 2 vs Air? Is upgrading all the way Air 2 worth the extra $100?

Air 2, yes. Air, no. Air 2 is worth the extra $100.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. The air 1 is great, for the extra $100 you get split screen mode, apple pay, and best of all touch ID. I'd steer clear of the 16Gb version.
But yes, Air 2 has enough benefits to upgrade from iPad 4.
I would do a backup and restore to factory first (the analogy of "reformatting" your iPad) to see if it improves things.
I think the A6 still has some juice left in it for iOS9. What I'm worried about is iOS 10 forward, where Apple might focus on 64bit SoCs. But then you might be able to wait for the Air 3.

I upgraded to the iPad Air 2 from a iPad 4 when the air 2 came out last year. You will be surprised at the difference in speed.
I went from the 4 to the Air 2. With the prices now, it's a no brainer. I wanted to get the Air, but held off lol.
I own both, and the difference between the 4 and Air 2 is INTERGALACTIC!!!
