I have a late '08 MBP and just recently upgraded to 8GB of RAM and put in a new 1TB HD, along with installing Mavericks. I am very pleased with the performance after all of these years and will wait at least another upgrade cycle before getting a new MBP.

Same here. I'll wait because I don't think the pricing of the current line up justifies the specs. €1330 for the base model with 4GB memory is a joke and I'm quite confident they will discontinue the 4GB model in the next cycle.

Then, I will buy the 16GB model for the sake of making it future-proof. I bought my unibody base model in 2008 with 2 x 1GB, upgraded it to 2 x 2GB and eventually to 2 x 4GB. I'm not going to buy a 2 x 4GB model now, not being able to upgrade later and instead be forced to buy a new machine within 2-3 years - I want to keep it for at least 4-5 years.

I also put an optical bay in my machine and replaced the 160GB hard drive with a 256GB Samsung SSD.

Apart from the fans spinning up relatively quickly, I have no complaints about the performance of this amazing machine - even after 5 years!

There's your answer.

Second that. If your computer "does everything you want," you shouldn't upgrade unless you just want a fancy new toy.

The industry wants us to buy things we don't need all the time, but computers are expensive. When it comes to the point where your computer doesn't do everything you need it to, buy a new computer then. Then you'll have a newer computer that you buy in 2015 (or whenever) that will last longer and will probably be even nicer than the current Macbooks, and you will have spent much less per year on computers. The longer your upgrade cycle, the better off you will be financially, it's better for the environment, etc. You know that cellphone commercial where people secretly throw away their cellphones when they see the cool new cellphone? Don't. Buy what you need.

Thanks everyone for your help. I will keep thinking about it for now. I do not have a real reason to upgrade , and as one of you here mentioned - I am not really know what I am missing until I see it. I will research more about it and see if it is worth upgrading or not for me or shall I save my money for a future better upgrade and survive on my current laptop.

@Ledgem

yes , I am sorry. All the Apple laptops look similar with similar naming sequence , it does not help that they upgraded all the macbook lines to macbook pros ... so just "macbook" now does not exist. Which makes me wonder , why did they just not call them all "Macbook" instead of adding an extra word to it "Macbook Pro"
