I am thinking how will they price the M4 MBA. A M4 MBP with 256GB storage would cost $1299. The Pro have better display, more ports, active cooling, SD Card. I am wondering if the M4 MBA will still be $1099? If so will the M2 MBA continue to be $999? or $899?.
M4 mbp is at 1600 for cheapest so I would guess air retains its’ pricing as they have some room until 1400.

Wasn't the MB Air always the first to get the new M? Or am I confusing something?

Maybe they even skipped the 4 and you have to wait for the M5. Would make sense, because Air users normally don't need more power every year.

First M adopter was mac mini. Then Air M1. But that was more of testing waters.

Right now since the water is tested, they pump out higher margin items MBP and Mini Pro. So now Air would be lagging behind. Like in all reality, who would buy $1600-2500 MBP when one can buy M4 Air for $1000? That is why there a delay of 9 month to allow all the interested parties jump on a M4 bandwagon.

What makes us so sure the MBA will even get an M4?

I could see it staying on M3 and going to M5 eventually, just to keep product staggered a bit

It's all been very hard to predict in the ASi era

Sounds like a similar situation to the MBP like Mini Pro to Studio. Just the other way round.

I think I also rather bought a 15" MBA if it existed when I needed urgently a new MacBook with a large as possible display and got an M2 Pro 16", what I don't really needed. Since I have my M3 iMac it's just lying around. I even thought of buying a second external display and use that one instead of the iMac because I need more Thunderbolt ports.

In your example they can also upsell.

People will snag all sorts of expensive m4 pro mbp and minis, once launched studio with m4 ultra, people will fomo and rebuy again trading in perfectly fine 6-9 month old m4 pro machines.

I looked what I get when I trade in my M2 Pro 16" MBP or M3 iMac now and buy an M4 Mini. At a reseller that gives a little more for trading in an a small discount on very new products and couldn't justify to give those two away for that cheap.

I just need more TB ports and more RAM. But I think I can even wait a year more for an M5 mini or Studio. It's not really urgent.

The M2 MBA will be ~3 years old by the time the M4 MBA is out and thus won't be available brand new directly from Apple anymore.

I was originally going to wait for M4 next March but I saw that Best Buy for Black Friday has the new M3 16GB 256GB models for $200 off (what I paid). It's really tempting to sell my current Air 8GB for a few hundred less and then pick up a new 16GB base with the $200 off. So essentially I would be paying $300ish to bump up to 16GB.

The only difference is, if I wanted M4 in March it will cost me $200 more and I wouldn't bother then. Having the 16GB ram is a lot more important than having M4 chip

What do you guys think?

Amazon has it even cheaper now. The deals are good and trade in is higher now than it will be next march. I’m in the same boat as you…

It's definitely really tempting. The $200 off the new 16GB base model really helps offset the loss when you sell your 8GB model. But I would sell it after Black Friday is done like in December.

My Best Buy won't even accept M3 8GB Airs which is odd. They only have M2 listed as the most recent they will accept. I checked out the Apple site and it said the M3 is too old to be accepted lol, really?

Best Buy Canada are clowns.
I feel like they're always a few days behind Apple product launches too, at least the last few times I've looked. It's like they're somehow taken by surprise when Apple launches a new product and then spend a few days trying to scramble to find information, while every other vendor on the planet knows what's going on.

And there's usually only one Apple rep for the entire Apple kiosk area. The rest of the computer department are PC Geek Squad guys who don't have a clue about Apple hardware.

I'm still undecided whether or not I'm going to do this. Something tells me I should just wait for the M4 in March. Even though when it comes out it's going to be full price, $200 more.

But mainly because I want to see what new laptops come out in Q1 2025 on the windows side too.

Are you going to buy the 16 at Best Buy?

Current plan is an Apple refurbished M4 or M5, 24GB, 512GB. But I haven’t entirely ruled out a brand new M4 when released. Likely I will wait though.
