Is Macbook pro lid waterproof

Is the lid waterproof - not the joints or edges or ports - just the lid - and away from the Apple logo light hole.

I want to make my own transfer decals - you put these on using water (not much). I reckon its safe, aluminium is pretty impervious to water. What do others thinkl ?

I don't believe any of them are officially waterproof or splash proof in any way (no IPX ratings). Anecdotally I've seen more than a few MBP's of various generations survive getting stuff spilled on their lids with no long-term issues though.

Personally I wouldn't risk it, vinyl stickers are a safer option IMO. But I think in practice especially if you were careful the decals would probably be ok.

Some people have found stickers have left permanent marks (like faint shadows) that cannot be removed, on the aluminum enclosures for iPads and MacBooks. Probably depends on the adhesive chemicals or acidity or alkalinity of the stickers reacting with the aluminum. You will only find out if it is an issue after you leave it there a long time and then remove it, by which time it is too late. If this does not bother you, then no problem.

Yeah sounds like a line they use a lot I expect… Are there any other places you could sell it to instead?

The back of my Macbook Pro was filled with stickers. I have just managed to remove it. It "feels" no more residue by touch. However, the sticker-covered area still has a different tone than the rest of the surface as in the attached picture. I am not sure if it is because of some remaining...

Just no…

It doesn’t have any water resistant rating so I would say no. I wouldn’t get water anywhere near a MacBook.

This being said if you absolutely positively want to do this, here’s what I would recommend. Get AppleCare. I mean you probably should have this on a MacBook anyway. If something goes bad just say spilled your water and damaged it.

I'd leave the decals off.
In the long run, they may end up being more trouble than they're worth...

Other way round. The stickers protect the aluminum from dirt and oxidation, that's why the previous sticker locations are lighter when you remove them.

I learned the hard way not to put stickers on my MBP especially if I wanted to make any $ off them in resale value. Even worse, I put stickers on my MBP that weren't designed for them. Only if you're sure you're going to keep your MBP till the day it dies. My wife has quite a few stickers on hers. I, personally, don't like stickers on my stuff and usually buy MBPs I want to try to trade in when it's time to upgrade.

To answer your question, as long as the water doesn't drip down into an important component while the MacBook is on, shouldn't hurt it. Water is dangerous cuz it flows to places that can be dangerous.

Depends on the adhesive used on the stickers. Some will stain the aluminum of left on for too long. Better to buy a clear hard shell case and put the sticker on there
