is macupdates safe to download from ?

Hi guys,
just a quick question,
I just found this website https://www.macupdate.com/ when i was looking for a software, ive seen its possible to download for free or to buy the the devs website. I made a few researches about this but did not find any recent answers.
Is it safe to download "free" softwares from macupdate, is it going to install additionnal apps or plugins ? etc

MacUpdate is safe, it doesn’t provide “cracked” apps. The downloads for paid apps are trial versions that the developers provide, the same as on their websites. Look into the Information section of an app and you will find a link to the website of the developer of that app.

I used to check macupdate for what's new available. However it's quite difficult (impossible) to see a list of new updates in chronological order since they completely re-designed the layout. I wonder any alternative site?
