Just got this new Penryn MBP yesterday, everything is great but I kinda notice some little but consistent sound coming from the left side (somewhere close to AirPort, CAPS LOCK key area).

I have no idea if this is normal since I remember I didn't really hear such a sound on my ex-gf's MBP...

So, my question is...is MBP supposed to work "silently" most of the time under low rpm (say under 2500 for both). yeh, i mean if you do hear NOTHING AT ALL from this machine even some kind of little hum.

Thanks

Any computer is going to make a small amount of noise. Of course, in this case I cannot hear it, but based on your description it sounds like it's perfectly normal.

so you can't tell if it's turned on or off based on the sound?

cuz the my definition of dead silence is when the machine is turned down.

Perhaps I'm not understanding your question.

This noise in which you are referring - do you hear it when the computer is powered off or on?

sorrie, i mean if its working silently and you heard no sound just like it's been turned off.

The hard drive is in the front left corner. You're probably hearing just a little bit from the spindle rotating. That's the only sound coming from mine, and it's just barely discernible in a quiet room (unless fans are running over ~3200).

edit: fans are along the back, each about even with the ends of the hinge.

All computers will make some noise when turned on! :)

Unless you've got a computer with SSD and passive cooling... The latter probably not happening in a long time if ever.

As another poster mentioned it's probably the harddrive you are hearing.
