Is MiWi the only way to tether on a 313 3GS?

Just wondering if there are any other ways to get tethering working for a 3GS. For whatever reason MiWi keeps erring out when I try to open it so I cannot use it (just keeps saying "updating license information...").

Not the only way. There's many hacks to enable native tethering. Also there is PDAnet.
