My retired (to a student) MacBook Pro mid 2009 15" is indestructible. The only thing I needed to do to it was upgrade its RAM and replace the spinning HDD with an SSD. What a workhorse! I hope I get as much time out of my 2016 MBP.

I have been through 5 Windows laptops from the period 2008 - 2014 and they all ended in tragedy. They all became slow and full of viruses even with anti virus I still found it to be slow and unusable and just plain crappy!!!

So what is it actually? Are these machines just really strong or what?

I made the switch from PC to Mac about 12 years ago, before then I was an avid, exhaustive PC hardware nerd. With some careful usage habits (good firewall setup, antivirus, anti-malware, avoiding public torrent sites ) Windows machines are not merely these 'throwaway, unusable plain crappy bloatware computers' like so many make them out to be. Sure, they don't have the design aesthetic Apple have and quite often are pre-loaded with garbage (Dell, HP *cough) but with care and tweaking, they can perform very effectively.

Yes, Windows machines are generally built to a lower price point and quality level than to their Apple equivalent. The PC market is much like Android's - fractured and decentralised - but for the markets they serve, they can be admirable.

Another thing; we all know that it is possible to force install Sierra on an unsupported mac...well... if you don't upgrade ram and replace HD with a SSD it will be laggy, however since it is possible to install Sierra and you can get it to run without any problems... that is proof that Apple is purposely disabling these machines because they want them GONE;)o_O! WELL ATLEST THEY HAVE LIGHT UP APPLE LOGOS!!!

Im sure if Apple could press a button to destroy all older Macs...They would!

Like I always like to call older Macs "The Steve Job Machines":apple::)

YOU SUCK TIM AND YOUR FLIMZY MACHINES WITH NO LIGHT UP APPLE LOGO...AND YOUR CRAPPY TOUCHBAR THATS TOTALLY STUPID!!!

To OP you can run sierra with a patch on your mac.

I have a 2009 and 2010 macbook (not pro) both running sierra.
Also have a 2007 imac which will be running sierra when I done the other upgrades to get sierra working.

Love my 2009 macbook, running a 2012 macbook air right now as my macbook keyboard has failed.
Will be fixing it soon.
They might be old but solid as a rock!
