Below is comparison of AW3 with Workout app and Garmin Fenix 3 for a short run. I first noticed this almost exactly same data on a longer run. It used to be the AW3 and F3 could be .02 miles different per mile. For both I'm using a Scosche Rhythm Plus for HR, so that should be same. In this run, I stopped the AW3 about 3 seconds after stopping the Garmin, which could account for the .01 mile longer run on AW3. I use RunGap to get the Apple workout into Garmin, and I have to change the date by a day or Garmin Connect will overlay thinking they are same run.

EDITED TO ADD: This is running with the AW3 LTE only, without the phone, as I always do and was a reason for the LTE.

The pace on AW3 is more erratic, but ends up same average pace. I actually notice the AW3 changing pace quicker than the F3 now as I intentionally speed up and slow down. I think DC Rainmaker needs to review AW instant pacing again to see if upgraded from "dismal".

Route map from Garmin is a little more accurate. Notice the little "L" path near the stop point. It's more of a triangle on the AW3 map, and the Garmin is more right.

Will include screen prints as well as Garmin links, though lately the Garmin links are not showing full data even though privacy for the activity set to "everyone".

Cadence on AW3 continues to be a problem though. The first part of every run shows ridiculously low cadence. On last few runs though, the average cadence is right, though the first part and the graph is crap.

(Also did treadmill 5K recently, and the AW3 was dead on with expected pace--and actually ended up exact average page of treadmill though .03 miles shorter over 3.22 miles. I think the AW3 is in fact learning my strides and pace and is good for indoor use now!)

Quick question... is this with the internal GPS in the AW3 or did you carry your iPhone with the watch synced to it... Thanks!

Damn, tried to be thorough and left out a significant detail. I edited my post to add this is running with Watch only, and WITHOUT the phone. This was one reason I got the LTE watch. Have a 7 Plus (and now 8 Plus in last couple days). No way I want to carry that phone in hand or pocket!

No problem. I can’t help you with your original question but I asked because I’m disappointed the built in workout app can’t be made to ignore the iPhone GPS. I was hopefully your charts had been with the iPhone assisted GPS. I always carry my iPhone with me in a spibelt on my waist but would love to use the internal GPS vs iPhone GPS for added accuracy. DCRainmaker has shown the iPhone assisted GPS tracks cut more corners and has slightly worse accuracy. My only choice will be to use a 3rd party app that allows the choice of the internal GPS or to disable the connection with the iPhone (don’t want to do that) as I don’t plan on using LTE beyond my trial. Hmmm.

I see. Even without LTE (as I do on my AW2), you should be able to run without the phone and use the watch's GPS only, no? But of course if you want the phone service for emergencies, etc. it defeats the purpose.

And the watch's GPS route is not quite as precise as Garmin's, I presume due to "smart recording" as opposed to 1 second recording I have set on the Garmin. But I'm finding it quite accurate and as I noted, seemingly more so lately. I'm also impressed with the watch's ability to learn my paces and cadence in order to give accurate results on a treadmill. Good luck.

I didn’t mean to hijack your thread so I’ll leave it at this. I personally always carry my iPhone and in the flexible waist belts to me it just doesn’t feel like I even have it so I can’t imagine not taking it for safety, pictures, and occasional app use. The LTE ability of the watch is interesting but for me not that compelling. I do believe the GPS issues with the AW are due to it doing a smart recording like method using GPS points and it seems to update even less sharing the iPhone GPS. I would be happy with track results like yours but wouldn’t want to see worse vs. the Garmin. Thanks again.

Sure. Only thing in any waist belt I will carry is a loaded Glock....... ;-)
