My iMac has been shutting itself down 1-3 times a day recently. It will either give me the 'you must restart your computer' screen or it will just freeze up completely and stick there. I've captured the error for the most recent time it did this. My thought is that the HD may be on its last legs, can anyone confirm or deny this for me please?

The only peripherals I have are speakers and external hard drives, but neither of those are new. And no, this iMac isn't affected by the recall notice.

Sure. Plug an external drive in, load the OS onto it, and set it as the boot drive. If your lockups stop happening then it would prove that the hard drive is the culprit.

If lockups keep happening then it is likely some faulty hardware... could still be the HDU, or it could be something else entirely like RAM, power supply, etc.
