That happened to my brother's too. Put some tape on it so you won't get cut. It will work fine :)

*cradles iPhone like a baby*

That looks nasty.

I'd be afraid of using it because of glass splinters getting into my fingers, so would probably utilize iFixit's guide or pay the repair fee.

My 3G looked like the above pics ^ for less than a few hours before I bought a new 3GS. I tried to avoid too much finger swiping because little glass fragments were flaking off as I moved my finger on the screen.

When I was buying my 3GS the sales rep told me that if I broke my phone I would have to buy one unsubsidized for the full retail price. But that if I bought AppleCare, it would only be 199 to get it replaced. Hopefully you have better luck getting a good deal on a replacement.

Broken screens and water damaged iPhones are now considered out of warranty and they are replaced for $199 now. No need to pay full price.

The replacement will get the balance of your broken phones warranty if there was one or 90 days.

Take it to Ubreakifix

$79 for glas replacement as long as lcd is ok. 20 minute service if you take it in. Theyve fixed 3 for me. Great service

For those who have butter fingers, get a case with rubber cushion outside.

For other people, iPhones are actually really tough, as seen here in stress tests from articles from a reputable publication

I dont really get why people think that keys will scratch a glass...

I think extreme pressure is need for a key to scratch a glass.

??? seriously the same cost as a new 3G-S? i think I'll try a screen protector to hold the glass pieces in

A new 3GS actually costs $600. The only reason you got it for $200 is because it was subsidized by AT&T with your 2-year contract. If you wanted to buy a 3GS without a contract it would cost you $600 too.

Exactly. Something people don't realize:

Glass: won't scratch easily, more likely to break if dropped
Plastic: will scratch easily, less likely to break if dropped

i agree, the only big screen-scratcher i've found was to be sand/dirt that could make its way into a pocket

if your really cheap

and it still works get a screen cover (done) I would go this route Ubreakifix. also this is why I laugh at the my naked Iphone threads! ;)

People I work with all have fancy iPhone cases. Leather, chrome, fancy plastic or nothing at all. This thread is why I stick with my cheap looking DLO rubber case. It not only protects against falls, but with the rubber grips, I'm less likely to drop it in the first place. I love it even though it's a little cheap looking.
