Last night it just stopped responding....I would select a song and it would bring the song up but not play it. I put the iPod up to my ear and I could hear the hard drive stuck in a cycle of "spin up, clickety click, powering down (sounded more like power dying though...sick sounding), and the platter come to a noisy slowdown/stop." I did a hardware reset, and now it plays songs, but the hard drive is still behaving that way. Is that how a healthy iPod sounds?

Just reset the ipod... Make sure it responds when connected to the computer and see if you can erase/restore it.

Exactly the same happened to me before my iPod died. The songs wouldn't play, and it would just skip through a few until it found one it would play. Menus freezing, and audible clicking sounds emanating from the iPod's hard drive.
