Hello Forum,

I have a one month old Macbook and decided to set up ichat today. To check it out, I decided to ichat with my wife on our 20"imac ALuminum.

During the chat I noticed that my wife looked digital (like when you zoom in on a picture and the quality gets worse). However, I looked clear on the imac.

To make sure it wasn't the lighting I went into the same room and put the computers next to each other. But still the imac was crystal clear but the macbook still looked very digital.

I just want to add that the cropped window that I can see myself on during i-chat is crystal clear, as well as all pictures taken on photobooth.

Is my isight messed up or do I not know what I'm doing. I am assuming the latter so any advice would be great.

Maybe it's something to do with quality settings.

Have you looked into the settings at all and played around with those to see if it helped.

I don't have a mac near, so I can't see if that's even possible.

I did try to play a bit. These are the settings I tried but did not work:

1. Quicktime Streaming Speed Automatc/ichat AV Bandwidth Limit None

2. Quicktime Streaming Speed 1.5/ichat AV Bandwidth Limit 500

Thanks for replying.

Anything having to do with resolution would help.

Or more obvious, "Quality Settings"
Haha. 😛

The cropped image of yourself is the iSight's full resolution capabilities, but iChat compresses the video for easier transmission, resulting in the 'digital' look you described. The iSight actually has a pretty clear picture, but iChat limits it to 640x480, I believe.

Ah!
He's right!

I don't know why I didn't think of that.

I understand what your saying, but as I mentioned, the picture is clear on my 20" imac when viewed full screen. This is why I cannot understand why itis not the same with my Macbook.

So which computer is the culprit?
Is the iMac iSight messing up, or the MacBook's?

Usually, if the lighting is perfect, it could look like that.
But I doubt that's your problem.

Does it look like that when the camera is used in photobooth?
That way, we can narrow it down to iChat, or the camera itself.

Ah, missed that part of your OP.

That is interesting that it is clearer one way than the other. Perhaps your network can only handle one of the streams being high quality. If you both are on the same network, perhaps one is taking up more of the bandwidth.

I don't know much about how networks operate, though.

Both computers isight look great on photobooth.

Interesting point. Tomorrow I'll go down the street and check it out. I'll post how it goes.
