Apple quoted you $320 to replace your motherboard?

Out of warranty?

With no Applecare?

And you turned their offer down?

I just lost all sympathy...

I would have had to ship it somewhere. In the end, I would lose more money than just paying $800 bucks for a new logic board. I've already gone 5 days without my laptop, I can't go on for too much longer. I'm a freelance web designer and 4 projects are on hold until I get my laptop back.

I'm not sure how you value your time, but even a next day shipping both ways and $320, I still think would come in under $800. If this service location can offer you same day service, this would be the only consideration for repairing it at that price.

A new or refurb isn't really an option, as Apple has a refurb at $1699.99. New being more of course. :(

Good luck with this, as I doubt it's been fun. ;) :p

Well I have good news, and I have bad news. Way more good than bad.

Bad news: My logic board is not fried, but my LCD screen blew out. It's going to cost about $750 bucks (including labor) to fix it.

Good News: I took you guys' advice, and I called applecare support one more time. I talked to about 4 or 5 different people until I got the results I wanted. Since my screen died so close to the date my warranty ended, apple is going to pay to get my screen fixed! They're basically "writing a check" to the authorized store (called iPlace) that's fixing my macbook pro, and I'll have it back by next Tuesday, or Wednesday, at the latest.

What I've learned: To avoid this kind of mess in the future, I'm just going to pay for the damn apple care. I already pay about $50 bucks a year with my insurance company, but they only cover "accidental damage" or "loss" or "theft." They don't cover hardware damage due to the manufacturer. The apple care will cover the hardware portion. Once I get my mbpro back, I'm thinking about selling it (on eBay, perhaps) and getting the new mbpro and I will definitely be getting applecare lol.

Congratulations on getting your MBP fixed! Good luck with eBay, and if you manage to get 50 more posts, check out the market place as well.

what's up with macbooks logic board? i don't see it happens to windows notebooks.

Mainly because PC's don't use LogicBoards, instead motherboards :D

Realistically speaking, the number of a certain model PC most likely doesn't get enough sales to add up to a significant number of users that have problems with them.

For example, let's say a notebook gets 50,000 sales and only 1-2% have a problem with them in the first 2-3 years. That's about 500-1000 people. That's a lot of people, but not enough to fill a board with complaints.

The MacBook Pro on the other hand got probably near a million sales (correct me if I'm wrong) and if only 1-2% have a problem in the first 2-3 years, that's about 10,000-20,000 people. More than enough to tell their experience on a forum.

How long did you wait?

I can't believe that you wasted so much time. You could have called Apple and received a shipping box, had it repaired by Apple and been back up and running within a week. How do I know? Last week, my Powerbook G4 Aluminum had a problem for the second time in seven months. I made an appointment with the Genius Bar and left it with them the next day. After a conversation with Customer Service and the Manager of the Apple Store I had a replacement MBP in my hands on the seventh day. All your redundant posts showed that you were chasing your tail and wasting time. I am self employed and the down time was brutal but there is little instant gratification in these issues. Time is of the essence when trying to resolve problems.

What you fail to realize is that I DON'T HAVE AN APPLE STORE NEAR ME! The closest one is MORE THAN 2 hours away.

MBP died Monday morning, called applecare Monday afternoon, was told I couldn't get any help because I had no warranty or applecare. Was put in touch with a local authorized apple reseller, but they were closed, so I had to wait 'til the next day to call them.

Called iPlace (authorized apple reseller) Tuesday morning was told I would have to physically bring in the mbpro to get it evaluated. I don't have a car right now so I had to wait until it was convenient for my mom to come to my school to get me. Earliest day was Thursday.

Went to iPlace Thursday morning, told them what was going on. Dropped my mbpro off, went back to school.

Got a call form iPlace Friday afternoon saying that my LCD screen had blown. Was quoted a price of $750 (parts and labor) to get it fixed. Called applecare one more time, explained my case, and got in touch with a supervisor who told me apple would pay to get my mbpro fixed.

Called iPlace immediately back (right before they closed) and told them apple was covering the costs. Cave them my case number and the phone number of the person I talked to.

iPlace called me back Saturday morning and told me my macbook pro will be ready by Tuesday.

So yeah, that's about the same time frame.

jmpmntwnty3, I'm glad to see it's worked out. :)

Due to the difficult transportation issue, I assumed doing things "in person" was not practical, and I thought there was a strong chance you would get stuck with the bill on this one.

if it was just the screen, why it didnt showup on the external one ?? .. im in the same boat with my MBP 2.2 SR one year's old machine, just went off one day after the warranty ended {security update} and now its at an authorized reseller too & they are not sure if its the GPU yet ..

ok something similar just happened to me as well!! i was using os x and restarted my macbook pro so i could log in to windows cause i like a game a bit...once i restarted i heard the start sound but then the screen was black!! i live in pakistan so i sent to the apple dealer here. they contacted apple who say the logic board is fried and needs to be replaced. apparently its going to cost around $1200!! what could have caused this??
