Mid 2012
[doublepost=1480905439][/doublepost]Everything is actually working fine until a couple days ago and it started lagging and I keep getting err timed out on chrome. So, I'm not sure if it's my actual internet provider OR my computer. I've cleared cache, I've repaired permissions. Didn't change anything. I'm not a hard core computer person. I just play a couple games on FB, do some movie stuff off my go-pro once in a while. Email.
You can reduce the size of your font, it is quite visible without it being huge.

Your mid 2012 can easily be upgraded to macOS Sierra (10.11) for free, you can skip right to it if you want. No need to go through with 10.9 or 10.10.

.... I get to the window where it shows Sierra and there is nothing there to choose. I choose the one that will let me and it takes me right back to the page where it says - not compatible.
Yes, need to see a screenshot. I don't think that message uses the words "not compatible"
If no screen shot, you could tell us, word-for-word, what that message says. Words matter, and may not mean what you think it says.

ok.... I think I got it figured out!! Again, thank you all for the suggestions and I know it must be frustrating to deal with a non techie!! Sorry about that. So.... I called a mac rep at a local shop. He said, as you guys said, this computer IS up gradable. He asked if I had an apple ID. Yes, I do but I have never used it. He told me step by step on what to do. I was NOT logged into apple. That's why I kept getting booted to another screen that was not helpful. So back to my computer..... he suggested I get much more memory. I now have 4GB. He suggested 16GB. I'm now looking for info if my machine has the slots for that. He lives in my area and says (as I have found) the internet providers basically suck up here. My issues could very well be the provider - NOT my computer. He said up grading with the amount of memory I have could slow it down. Is that true? And can my computer hold 16GB of memory? I think I gave all the info on my particular computer above. All the stats on it. He said I do NOT need to buy a new computer right now. Mine is perfectly fine for several years. Just a few tweaks on it.

Your computer is able to handle 16GB just fine, it already has two RAM slots, each filled with a 2GB RAM stick. You'd pull those out, put 2X8GB sticks in and you'd be back up and running. Upgrading the RAM on these takes about 10 minutes, top, including dissassembly and reassembly.

Because everything was working for me up until now. I don't keep up on updates if everything is working. All of the replies.... I've TRIED everything you all suggested. I went to all those links, sites and nothing works. I keep getting a window that says not compatible. So don't know what to do if it says that. The mac app is insane and the worst one. I get to the window where it shows Sierra and there is nothing there to choose. I choose the one that will let me and it takes me right back to the page where it says - not compatible.
If you clicked my link, it would ABSOLUTELY work and install Sierra.

Bring your mac to an Apple store and they'll fix it for you.

Do NOT download anything from ANYWHERE else than the app store that says it'll install some newer macOS.

Here's the steps.. If you follow them, it WILL work:

1) Open Mac App Store
2) On the right hand side of the window, locate and click on "macOS Sierra"
3) On the new window that opens, click on "Download"
4) Wait for it to download, and then follow the prompts on the Sierra installer

If there is an error, copy/paste the ENTIRE ERROR MESSAGE or take a screenshot/photo of the error and POST IT HERE

Also, in the future, **ALWAYS** keep up on updates. It's not just to make things "work better", it's to fix security holes, bugs that you don't see always, and will IMPROVE your mac experience. Newer versions will let your mac run FASTER with BETTER BATTERY LIFE. These are great things -- and it's completely FREE.

thanks :) I will do all that. I will keep up to date on updated info from now on. I had that turned off because of verizon mostly. LONG story. But I'm battling them right now. They said I used 14GB in one day!! Impossible. Since my history states I use 10 GB a month or less and I don't do anything different. I had an overage about a year ago and they insisted it was my updates on my computer so I turned those off. All this upgrading will probably have to wait til I get my new internet company in --- on Friday of this week. I will most likely be dropping verizon today and be internet-less for the rest of the week. My new service is un-limited data so hopefully all that works out in the end. I really doubt searching around the app store caused my laptop to use up 14GB of data!! I didn't even download anything.

I'm using a recently bought refurbished Macbook Pro mid-2012 LED OS 10.12 and have a couple of questions:

1) Is it OK to upgrade from OS 10.12 (Sierra) to later versions, up to High Sierra?

2) I'm having a problem trying to download the free Apple app "Pages" from iTune/Apple store.

3) I cannot "Authorize" this computer via iTunes.

In both 2) & 3) above I get a message saying "error connecting to Apple ID server" even though I have an Apple ID and am able to sign in to my Apple account using that ID.

I have been in contact with Apple support and they have been trying to help, even gave me a code to redeem the Pages App. But, whenever I try to download, I have the same problem as in 2) above.

Question: Is there any reason that you can think of, because this is a pre-owned refurbished MBP, which would cause this problem?

Any help would be appreciated :)

If you buy the RAM, you might as well by an SSD and have the tech install that as well and then install the OS.

Is this a refurb directly from Apple or a refurb that someone else bought and then sold to you?
If the latter, is the current installation of macOS tied to your Apple ID? (or is it a previous installation that the previous owner did, and entered their Apple ID in when setting up the OS?)
