Okay, sadly I have no pics to back this up at the moment however you can see if this is normal rather easily...

When I take a disk out of my MBP after using it for awhile it has a ton of circular scratches, as if from the reader, on the bottom of the disc. Take a look at any discs you might use a lot in your MBP...

Basically this doesn't make me feel too awesome since I am really anal about never scratching my disks.

If you are sure that the scratches are coming from your MBP, then you have a problem with the Optical Drive and should get it replaced.

An easy way to tell is by inserting an unused blank CD. Leave it in there for a while and then eject it and check it for scratches. If it has any, replace the drive.
 
Mine is doing the same thing and it doesn't want to burn DVDs.
I need to get it replaced, but don't feel like dealing with those mac geniuses.
