Is my new Mac going to blow up?!

I got my new MacBook Pro about 3 months ago and I love it …

Earlier today, I left for lunch and everything was running fine. I wasn’t doing much - just a couple Safari tabs, an Excel macro file, Messenger, and Tweetbot. But when I returned from lunch, I heard a very loud noise coming from my office. And upon entering, it was my computer making this loud, pulsating type of sound. It was almost like the sound and slight vibration a bedside alarm clock would make. It stopped upon quitting the open applications.

So I guess have 2 questions:

1. What might be causing this issue?
2. I have Apple Care. What will be done? Fixing? A replacement?

Since it stopped when you quit your open applications, my guess is that one of them was making the noise.

Call Apple support and ask them about it. They may suggest having you take it in to run a diagnostic on it, or do it remotely. Did it happen only once?

Yes, this is the 1st time it’s happened.

It’s a new M1 Pro.

1. You closed apps. Open them again & see if the problem can be reproduced. Then close one at a time to determine which was the cause.
2. You left your macbook and went to lunch. Did you even put it to sleep? Or just leave it for anyone to f*ck around with?

1. Will do ... but no success so far. Hopefully that is a good sign ? Just odd/trobuling it would occur once (it would have to occur again, right?)
2. I either put it to sleep or it went to sleep. Either way, the door was locked and only one person would have access so ...

Sounds like something might be wrong with the fan. Can you get it to max out CPU for a while again to force the fans into high and see if that causes a recurrence?

I contacted Apple support and they have me reinstalling MacOS Monterrey ?‍♂️

That's step one in Apple troubleshooting for pretty much anything, you just need to go with it... Its a methodical process of elimination.

Ok so after running Diagnostics with an agent, I’ve got to bring it in.

Should I expect them to replace my machine with a new one? Or fix it? Were 3 months into a 4 year apple care warranty

My guess is it would depend on the nature of the issue. If it's your only machine and they try to get you to wait a long time for a repair, I'd appeal to them for a faster replacement. It's only a few months old, so it's not like you'd be replacing a Mac with a lot of wear on it.
