I would be very surprised if it works that way. AT&T would basically be selling him a phone for $299. That extra $25 a month on the line is what pays for the subsidy. It doesn't magically go away if you move the phone to another line.

But that's what many of us have been doing in the last several years and some speculate that at&t will eventually put a stop to this loophole (as well as the grandfathered unlimited).

No, I've done my share of swapping with AT&T. When they say upgrade swapping, they mean phone swapping between lines, not adding 2 years of contract to Line 1. According to AT&T, Line 3 has used a smartphone upgrade with contract for 2 years and will be charged $40 for 2 years. Line 1 will be charged $40 for one year.

The OP is on the mobile share plan. A dumbphone used to be $30/month on it, but now it appears to be $15/month.

However, for those of us still on the old plan, we can easily upgrade a dumbphone line (that we keep for $10/month) to get the new iPhone, device swap it to an existing iPhone line, and put the dumbphone back on the upgraded line (with two years contract renewed) for $10/month.

That can't be the case, I d

I am pretty what you describe is still how it works? I have been doing this swap technique for a while and it always kept the prices on the lines the same, unless they changed something under MSP.

Yes, they did. Lines are now designated by device. If you do a smartphone upgrade on a line, you will be charged the smartphone line price with no discount until the contract is up.

I guess that changes things. Is this only for the MSP or does it also apply to the legacy plan?

The only different thing I heard this year is you can no longer order through Apple to get the subsidized prices. You must now order through at&t. I've always ordered through Apple and I hope at&t doesn't screw up my order, as I've heard too many carrier horror stories regarding preorders.

well, I will guess I have to chat again and see if I get a different answer. I will do it soon.

Me : I would like to update XXXX (smart phone currently on contract, paying $40 a month), using a shared upgrade from YYYY (basic, phone off contract, paying $15 a month)

AT&T : Ok so both lines would be discount. What you will need to do is transfer eligibility to the XXXX number and if you are upgrade to the AT&T Next you will get a $25 discount. The YYYY line will get the discount for having the basic phone on the account.

Me : ok, so the line XXXX will receive the discount of 25 dollars even though technically the line is still 1 year into a 2 year contract

AT&T : The contract is up on the line once you upgrade it because you will be transferring that eligibility and going to the Next plan. The contract will still be with the phone so you won't be able to unlock it or anything but the lines contract will be on the terms of the AT&T Next plan.

Me : Ok, and the other option is that I use the upgrade from YYYY, to update XXXX to a contact plan. In which case, YYYY line will now be under a 2 year contract still paying 15/month and XXXX will remain paying 40/month, but the contract on that line will still end in a year?

AT&T : Yes that is correct.

@mb2008, This is the second rep that has told me this to be the case.

Damn, I would say then you should stay under contract, because that way you're essentially getting a phone every year for $599 ($299 up front + $300 in extra line charges) instead of $750. Assuming the rep is correct.

So far it seems like the only downside is that I lock myself into a contract on the dumb phone line, but I can't see myself changing carriers.

Well, that's a great deal. Hopefully it goes down like that. All I can tell you is I tried to keep the dumb phone at $15 and they bumped on the next bill.

Are you sure that you did an official upgrade share? I know previously you would use the upgrade to purchase the phone, and then not activate it on that line, but now their website has an official flow to share upgrades.

May or may not be related. But I know they are detecting sims/devices and adjusting the plans automatically. I swapped some sims around between my old iPad, Laptop and phone, and I saw my monthly pricing change automatically for those devices. I did not try it for an "on-contract" phone, but I think I might :)
