I recently sold my Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, I originally traded in my 12.9" iPad Pro M1 towards it, Something I regret. I now want to go back to an iPad, I'm thinking the iPad Pro M2 12.9" model. WWDC is right around the corner and we are about 7 months into the M2 iPad Pro update, are Apple likely to announce a new iPad Pro anytime soon and should I just wait?

I don’t get my hope up for a new pro model anytime soon but even if so, get a refurbished now and sell it when something cool shiny new arrives that for some reason you ultimately need to have but the recent iPad updates have been solely evolutionary to me.

I think what makes it worse is that there are leaks Apple are working on a 14" iPad Pro, that is something I would be very interested in. A bigger screen 14" is the main reason I tried the Tab S8 Ultra, it's the software I couldn't get along with and I missed the Apple Pencil compared to the SPen.

Apple works on a ton of devices that never see the light of day. I get your point though, you never know.

I'd say yes. If the iPad Pro is mission critical for you and you want the best one, definitely get an M2 Pro. There may or may not be M3 models in the fall. I doubt those will decrease the utility of your M2 model in any way, and they're coming at some point whether you like it or not.

With iPad Pro, I think it's best to treat it like a MacBook purchase. Buy the one you need when you need it, and upgrade when the one you have isn't getting the job done anymore. Pretty much the safe bet for all tech, honestly.

It really depends how much you can wait. If you want a 14", like me, don't spend too much money on a M2 12.9, if you can find a refurbished entry level M1 12.9 that can let you wait until a bigger iPad is released, maybe do that instead.
I have the S8 ultra but don't use it much other than for streaming, if a 14" iPad (or larger) was available I'd have little use for my S8 ultra. I have considered selling it, but for streaming the size is so much better than my M1 12.9. I am a multi device person so I feel no sense of guilt in having more than 1 tablet, but if a bigger iPad is available that would remove the only advantage of the ultra (I much prefer the iPad aspect ratio and the black bars in videos don't bother me in the slightest as long as the size is the same, and a 14.1" iPad would still be smaller for videos but close enough I guess...)

New iPad Pro models likely won’t out tell the M3 chip and that likely won’t be tell later this year or early next year

The M2 iPad Pro will be identical to the one you previously had. You could wait the two weeks for WWDC at least and see what Apple announces. I doubt we will see new iPad Pros this year, but I've been very wrong and surprised a couple of times before.

Depends upon what is important to you. Current models are fast enough for almost any task. Any new models would likely only offer incremental performance improvements with possibly more memory. The major rumored change is the switch to OLED. Time frame for the next upgrade is likely 2024.

Gurman's guesses in January:

  • Apple has been working on larger iPads, but I’m told not to expect those this year.
  • Updates to the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pros won’t come until the first half of 2024, I’m told. These will likely include a new design and they’re set to include OLED displays, a first for an iPad.
  • Any updates to the iPad mini, iPad Air and entry-level iPad this year won’t be anything more than a spec bump — if they arrive at all.

The only difference I can tell between the iPad I had before and the M2 version, will be the Apple Pencil hover feature. I do use my tablets for drawing, it's one of the reasons why I missed my iPad and sold the Tab S8 Ultra. Saying that tho I'm not sure how much of a big deal it will be for drawing, it's probably nice to have but not a necessity. The only other thing I can think of would be for Final Cut Pro, but I also have a Mac so I'm not sure if I will need the new Final Cut Pro as well, I will probably test out the 1 month free trail tho.

OLED screen probably won't matter to me, except for when watching Netflix and so on. Drawing apps like Procreate probably won't see any difference. The rumoured 14" iPad Pro is what i'm interested in the most, as someone who loves to multitask, draw in Procreate and other apps, having a BIG canvas is helpful.

M3 iPad Pro is still a year away taking into consideration 1.5 years of iPad Pro release cycle.

I’d say it is. I bought a 2018 one just after Christmas and the performance is on par with my M1 iPad Air. It’s just bigger and has the 120 Hz screen (which I don’t care about but seems to be a selling point for many).

As for even bigger models - depends on your use case, of course, but I find the 12.9” quite heavy and unwieldy when not lying flat on a desk.

I forgot to mention that I have Apple One Premier, so I will also be using the iPad to play Apple Arcade games, read magazines with Apple News Plus and for when working out with Apple Fitness+

I'm thinking at the moment to just buy the iPad Pro now, WWDC is 2 weeks away today UK time) but I can't see Apple announcing any iPad's at the event. iPad OS17 isn't going to make any difference to buying a new iPad now or waiting until next year.

Highly unlikely but if you aren't in a hurry I'd still wait just in case.

Forgot about the pencil in my original reply since I don't use one.

Oh I love the Apple Pencil, it's the best digital pen/pencil in my opinion. Making digital art is something I enjoy a lot. Apple have closed the gap quite a bit with the iPad Air 5 tho I've noticed. The Air 5th Gen has the M1 chip inside, so basically the chip I had in my previous M1 iPad Pro.

I love mine too--I don't use it a lot these days, but when I need it I'm really glad it's there, especially when something needs a quick signature.

They are great, the only thing that bothers me is that I've still got mine but it hasn't been used in about 6-7 month so the battery on it is probably dead. When I get a new iPad I just hope that it will charge up with it and I don't have to buy a new one.

The 6GiB iPad Pros do close apps fairly often under heavy use compared to the M1 iPads with 8GiB so in that regard there is a noticeable difference for me.

I don't get the idea of "waiting". It's just using an inferior device out of stubbornness because the current gen is "old". It's current. It cannot be old. So, don't wait. Now for which one you should buy:

Features that M2 iPad Pro has over M1:

- Higher clock speed
- More GPU cores
- Pencil Hover
- +1 year of updates

Now, subtract the price of the best deal for an M2 by the best deal for an M1. Are those features important enough for you to buy the newer model? If yes, buy the newer one. If no, buy the M1.

It’s my own fault for trying the Tab S8 Ultra, I’ve been an Apple guy for years but I was taken in by the bigger 14” screen. The waiting is because the iPad Pro is now 7 months old, I get what you are saying tho.

Apple will 100% release the 14.2" iPad Pro, however, at the time of writing, the iPad Pro M2 is an absolute beast. If you are in need for an iPad today, then the current line-up will definitely hold its own. My M1 iPad Pro is still a beast even after a year of ownership.

Just to note, I do have and enjoy my Tab S8 Ultra. The 14.6" is a monster.

I’m definitely in need of getting one since I currently don’t have an iPad. I traded in my M1 iPad Pro towards the Tab S8 Ultra last year, I regret it immensely!!
