Basically the big $64,000 question: Is OS XII Monterey all clear from the 'brick bug'?

I just poked my head up and I see OS XI already being abandoned and OX XII already?! Dang...
Is this free of the big brick bug now and Apple just picked up and moved on? Or is that too much to speculate?

the brick bug; no such thing. if you're referring to the fact that, with every new OS, some people have problems... that's something else. there's no simple one-size-fits-all solution to this. but if you're nervous, wait for the official release; we're at beta 1, and it is exactly that; beta 1.

What "brick bug" is this?

No, the "brick bugs" where fixed in Big Sur updates.

One was in 11.0 where the installer would freeze and you would not be able to boot on 2013/2014 MBP's, and the other Apple issued a fix on 11.2.2 iirc where it would disable cheap USB-C adapters from working because they would brick newer MB's.

I'm talking about the one that would lead to corrupted EFI firmware. No chime. No boot key commands recognized. Black screen. Affects all models. The only fix is to reflash the EFI chip on the logic board. Not the T2 bug.

I don't know the exact sequence to trigger the bug. It needs to do a corrupted write to firmware. People reported it mostly after letting an update roll through and then a reboot sometime after that. (I wasn't willing to just sacrifice any more logic boards to learn all the trigger/failure modes. Should go without saying.)

The T2 bug only affected the newer T2 having machines and there was a recovery solution using a 2nd machine.

This was only a problem in 11.0.1 and only affected late 2013-2014 13" MacBook Pros. It's been long fixed.

the problem with the concept of a 'brick bug' is that not everyone defines it the same way. so it's not actually a thing... it's just that some people have had some problems (so yes, better that you defined your specific concern, rather than a generic concept)...

We need a new rule in the macOS universe. If anyone says Mac OS X then all replies to them must be in LATIN 😝☝️👍

That's the T2 bug. The brick bug can hit ANY model.
No, there's no T2 in 2013/2014 Macs. You'll need to find more references to what you're talking about. More detail about "the ____ bug" would be helpful.

Haha
Old habits die hard? (Again, habits that Apple started with "OSX")

Oops to that comment then! Sorry for not looking that up before replying. (I guess I tend to lump the post-Jobs machines together and don't think about them too much.)
The newest model I saw a complaint about was a 2019. Mini and iMac were reported in addition to MBP. I'm looking at a pile of 3 2011 boards right now waiting for an EFI reflash.

What on earth are you talking about?

It was pretty obvious from the get go that MacOS 11 was going to be a single year release when 11.1 came out.

Apple have not abandoned MacOS 11 one iota, no more than iOS 15 means they’ve abandoned iOS 14…

wait, so you're saying... we don't have throw out our current macs when a new OS drops? because this changes everything....

Pretty obvious after seeing machines getting bricked! :D

I don't know. OS X had what, a 20 year run? OS XI has now had... looks like 1 year. Now they announce OS XII. I guess read into that what you will, right?

Why are you reading so much into a number?

It makes total sense for Apple to reset after Big Sur.
