as far as the increasing amounts of ram it takes to run operating systems and applications, it would be interesting to see if all those factors warrant half a gig of ram which may be the absolute minimum amount of ram to run an app like photoshop over os x in 2004

i heard posters say they have 384 mb of ram running osx and photoshop on a sub-500 mhz g3 mac...maybe that's slow but maybe the industry is just moving so fast ram-wise these days

OS X is primetime. Some Apps fell back to the midday soap opera status, and some slipped way back the the previous nights infomercials. The OS itself is finished, and has been for a while.

No reason why somebody would hold themselves back. If your "killer app" hasn't been ported, it tells you what they think of you as a customer. It's been a long time since OS X was introduced, and companies that aren't here yet are just plain ignorant of the user's needs.

Nothing about the OS is holding users back (trust me, there are plenty of people still using 8.6 out there that don't realize they are able to upgrade the OS on their computers) At my old job I would get plenty of people calling in "I have an iMac 9.0", Me: "what kind of imac mam?", "An iMac 9.0, I told you allready". riiiiight... those people should never upgrade, ever. They should use the machines until they die, buy a new machine and the "for Dummies" book on it. Little bug fix and firmware updates should be done, but a point release, no way. It is easier for both them, and tech support.

But if you are a professional and you are still using a classic operating system, you need to get with the program, before your left in the dust. And consumers and good 'ole mac addicts, just do it, nothing stopping you other than the money and install time.
I know this may be offesive to some, and I really don't mean it that way.

I agree execpt w/this last part. If yer program of choice doesn't have an OS X version (or a stable OS X version) then yer kinda screwed. Don't diss the user if it's not his fault.

Re: Is osX ready for Primetime?

It completely depends on what you're doing, but unless you're doing a more obscure thing I don't see why OS X is not ready. I'm a web designer and developer, and it is ofcourse infinitely better than OS 9 for that. Print guys might still be shy, but for general productivity Apps OS X has been ready for a LONG time.

You must have wanted to start a "OS X vs. OS 9" war... so here's my volley. Get rid of OS 9 and cleans yourself. :)

Oh it WORKS just fine in X, but I have 9 doing a minimum extension thing so Recon gives about twice the frame-rate as X. It's worth the 15-second reboot. Just finished the whole thing in Elite, whatever that means.

Hey, this is why I posted this topic, I was curious who osX was ready for:D Believe me I want it to be ready, but for Pro audio apps, this is just starting to happen. I bought a dual 867 with superdrive back in august for video and It was very fast but with the first version of jaguar, FCP,IDVD and Imovie had problems so I sold it in anticipation of the newer models. I'm set for now with my quicksilver733 and os9. I'll wait until all my apps are set before I buy a new OS X only Mac.
Looks like protools is ready we'll see, I guess it depends what apps you use:D

I have used OSX exclusively at work since 10.0.3. I have used OSX exclusively at home since 10.0. It has made my life easier since 10.2 came out. I don't even want to see OS9 anymore.

At work we do a HEAVY Photoshop and Illustrator/InDesign workflow. 1.25 GB files are the norm. I can't even describe to you how great it is to be able to open these files, and not have hiccups.

I have had OSX, and PS7, Ill 10 and ID2.0 running on a 400Mhz g3 PowerBook, and while it wasn't flying, the experience was good. Solid as a rock. now on my brand-spanking-new Dual 1.25 Ghz, it is just flawless... If only Epson could get their Scanning software out of the alpha stage...

bingo!!!

i thought you may leave that out

why do you think the publishing company my wife works for is still os 9.x?;)

for primetime in every industry?
probably not. but the printing industry is one
that osx can be used in without regret. i work
as a graphic artist and see osx working side by
side os9. the benefits are easy to see when
compared side by side. quartz extreme in
photoshop is one of them. another would be
the incredible multitasking of osx.

but i know the audio world is waiting for bugs
to be worked out. as far as medical/science, i
wouldnt know. and im not sure apple has the
horsepower to compete in the movie industry.

so overall? i guess not. but god, this really is
an incredible os, i love it.

I started using OSX as my main OS a little bit before jaguar came out.. 10.1.x but it was very slow on my machine.. it is still slow now but things are better because developers started making faster apps lately.

the way we worked around minor compatibility
problems with osx is to have a few slave
systems running os9....for fpo scanning, things
like that.

any pro graphic designer businesses/firms out there anyone know of on os x?

how about free lance individuals who use photoshop, illustrator, pagemaker in os x at home or in a business?

just curious?

Wow, this is my first post in a LONG time. I would like to chime in with my $.02...
I think OS X is ready as a concept and what it is trying to be, infact, i think it's long over-due. Beautiful GUI, relatively stable, etc. Problem is first and foremost (for me atleast) the lack of apps currently available. As a Logic Audio user the death of VST support has forced me to stay in 9. I've spent too much money on many instruments and plug-ins that I need on a daily basis. Plus I also do layout and graphic design and Quark keeps me in 9, along with all my best Photoshop plug-ins. And while I'm already in 9 for that I may as well stay there so I can access all those plug-ins in After Effects as well. I still can't get Final Cut to be 100% stable in X either, and Final Cut Express has been basically unusable. Same with DVD Studio Pro. They all seem to do better in 9 right now. I think alot of this has to do with the fact that OS X is still very hungry. It takes a pretty powerful machine to exploit it to it's potential. I think the OS is just about ready for primetime but maybe the hardware is not. Don't get me wrong, Jaguar is great but when Apple's own apps don't work correctly that spells trouble for me. It's getting better everyday though. I'm learning Indesign now and hopefully it will kill off Quark. That would be a nice start. It's still damn slow though. Eventually OS X will thrive because it is what it is, a lovely environment, not to mention it's easier to use than alot of DVD menus I've encoutered lately. The time is...Soon.

I am going to revive this old thread.

Yes, both at work and freelance, I use OSX. Our studio has about 100+ designers, art directors, pre-press and photo - all on OSX. The only thing that most people still run in classic is Outlook. We have switched to an all Adobe, all OSX workflow about six months ago, but over a year ago half the people already were using that setup (Illustrator 10, Photoshop 7, Indesign 2, Acrobat 5). I hope that you move away from Pagefaker - take advantage of the upgrade Adobe offers for PM to InDesign!

The few who don't have OSX are the same people who are viciously defending their copy of Illustrator 8 and Quark 3.32 - the IS department can't even come close to those machines, they are so guarded by their users.
