The hard drive on my 2013 macbook air failed and was replaced and the OS is now Catalina (was high Sierra). The old HD had pages installed but it was never updated or purchased so there is no record of pages on my appstore account.
I have some pages documents on the cloud that I can no longer work with as Catalina does not support a new pages download.
I found an old external hard drive which was used to back up the original macbook with time machine.
Would the time machine backup on the external hard drive be compatible with Catalina and would I be able to restore pages using it?
I haven't yet attached the external hard drive to the repaired macbook air - is there anything I need to be aware of if/when I do so?

You shouldn't have any issues with reading an old Time Machine drive on a newer system (just don't tell the new system to back up on top of it). Pages will be there, unless you explicitly opted out of backing up the Applications folder.

You can always download Pages, Numbers, Keynote, GarageBand and iMovie for free if you have not purchased them with your account.

It's many years ago now all or some of those apps were pre-installed and had to be connected to an Apple-ID to install them for free again later.

I think the issue is that it won't let you "purchase" them if you're not on the latest OS, and therefore you can't go into the purchase history to download the last-compatible version.

Didn't think of that. It seems there are also no direct links to older versions like it's the case for macOS.

@aprilscot24

Getting the old version out of Time Machine should be no problem, if is too old for running on Catalina you could also try using LibreOffice to open the files.
