I read a lot about new features in OS X 10.10 and iOS 8. But no one talks about Quicktime anymore it seems. Is Quicktime player going to die?

It's not dying : Yosemite now even features QuickTime the ability to record live video of your iOS product.

QT also plays AC-3 5.1 audio natively now. No need to run the video through Handbrake for the audio.
