Is a screen protector necessary for the iPad Pro if I plan to use the Pencil extensively with it? Would it hinder the pressure sensitivity in any way? I'm really anal when it comes to scratches and marks on the screen and figure that a cleaner screen helps a bit when it comes to resale value.

It shouldn't hinder pressure sensitivity too much. The sensor is in the Pencil for pressure, so the measurement doesn't depend on the screen. That said, if the protector is softer, then might mean you need a tiny bit more pressure to get the same result (dunno how noticeable it would be, just working from a hypothetical standpoint).

I also wonder how sensitive the touch detection is though, and if you can still get a "light touch" to register through a screen protector.

Do the ballistic glass protector. Probably have better performance.

Not necessary, but a matte screen protector improves the feel of drawing or writing with the pencil.
