Is SD or USB a better semi-permanent storage option?

Looking for an easy way to increase storage and I'm wondering which is better to leave in place more-or-less constantly. SD or USB?
 
USB 3.0 will give you faster transfer speeds, but if you get one of those microSD adapters that sits flush with the edge of the Mac then you won't have anything sticking out of the side.
