Is anyone running sidecar with a Mac mini with no other monitors ? Is sidecar responsive enough to used like a wireless monitor this way. Could you run a mini headless and have it launch sidecar to an iPad ?

No, because it only extends your Mac desktop. For fun I tested this by enabling Sidecar to my iPad and then unplugging my monitor. The iPad was unresponsive until I plugged back in my monitor and disabled Sidecar.

maybe you could use one of those fake display dongles to fool Mac OS that people use for headless Mac mini’s and start up sidecar with a script when it boots

Note that you can use Luna Display as the only display for a Mac Mini. There are instructions on the Luna Display site.

I would like to avoid using luna display. Luna display works great when you use the dongle plus a cord but using strictly WiFi dongle there is a 2 second rendering delay when updating the screen like scrolling or moving a window. This has nothing to do with WiFi speed but something they have built into the software. Its supposed to reduce lag when dragging windows but to me its just annoying. The rendering delay is visually jarring and very noticable.

Jump Desktop might be an option, I'm curious too as I'm looking to do the same thing. If I could return my keyboard, mouse, and 4k monitor I'd save about $500 (and barely pay for the pencil and magic keyboard for the ipad). Looks like you could just leave it running and connect when it gets the signal, as in set it up and unplug the display. Could probably have an autostart on startup function too.

Edit: I found someone say screens works better for mac, idk.
