I'm looking to get a baseline 2020 MacBook Air? But it's got a 1.1GHz Dual-Core Core i3.

My 2012 13" baseline MBP has 2.5 dual i5.

So this my 2012 MBP faster than the latest Air?

Geekbench marks are not everything, but using them, even the lowest i3 is much faster than the 2012 i5:

2012 i5 - 2020 i3
Geekbench 4 (SingleCore) 2957 - 4605
Geekbench 5 (SingleCore) 580 - 1007
Geekbench 4 (MultiCore) 5642 - 9241
Geekbench 5 (MultiCore) 1265 - 2021

Of course it is faster. The 1.1GHz is only the base clock. It typically operates in the 2-3GHz range.

Not to mention the SSD alone is at least twice as fast as your old MacBook.
