Update the ROM yourself? Do you have the URL of this thread?

I've been waiting for several weeks to get mine from macmall, they keep giving me new estimated dates which are worthless. I might as well as in the forums "when do you think my card will arrive" and it would be about the same effect.

See post #23, click on link.

You can find cards with 1024 byte ROM then you can flash it with the Apple ROM and it works perfectly, from what I've read, for over $100 less than what Apple charges. YMMV.

There is a huge thread on it.
I understand that, but not everyone knows how to do that.

The 2600 XT can be used for gaming if you stick to lower resolutions or if you don't want play the newest games. Crysis (an incredibly wasteful game) runs reasonably well (20-30 fps) with a couple of compromises (unacceptable for "true" gamers). Elder games like Age of Empires 3 or Unreal Tournament run perfectly at highest settings.
Halflife2 runs very well and Call Of Duty 4 runs better than I expected and both look better than Crysis in my opinion, at least with this card.

Hope that gives you a small overview of the gaming possibilities with the ATI

With the 8800 you should be able to play virtually every game (exception: crysis) at highest settings and high AA/AF

Although (as I've said elsewhere) two 2600 XTs can be linked using a Crossfire cable, which boosts performance considerably (under Windows only, though). The 8800GT is still faster but you do pay a premium for the privilege.
