So the strongest evidence we had of a 7th generation iPod touch was a reference in iOS 12.2 to "iPod 9,1," - an unknown iPod device. Obviously iOS 12.2 was released in late March without any 7th gen iPod Touch appearing but I'm curious if the reference to "iPod 9,1," are still present in either the released iOS 12.3 or the 12.3 beta 2 just released.

It doesn't cost anything for Apple to leave a placeholder in the iOS software.

A placeholder reference to iPod 9,1 is not proof that they are going to release the Touch 7.

My prediction is that the Touch 7 will be released in late August / early September just before iOS 13 comes out unless Apple cancels the Touch at that time (i.e. we will know the fate of the Touch in late August / early September)..

I agree with you but if the reference is gone well that could mean they are no longer testing a new device and a clue that the 6th gen will be removed from sale. I also think that a replacement could be announced before late August/September - the current Touch was released in July.....

and if the 7th generation does appear and the only has a processor bump to A10 for A11 and no bigger battery it will be a huge disappointment. The fact that no Face ID or Touch ID references were found for the iPod 9,1 entry likely means the same form factor is being used and that likely means no bigger battery.

Apple shot themselves in the foot with the touch. Most likely will not get iOS 13, which comes out in less than 3 months. This is a first since the iPod touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3g. Even the 5th gen touch received the most current iOS updates for a year and two months after it was discontinued.

Yeah I'll just save up and get a cheap iPhone Xr if Apple doesn't give it a proper bump.

Kallum.

Technically the 4th gen touch was discontinued in 2013 and didn't get that years update (iOS 7), but of course its successor was already out. Anyway, iOS 13 will be revealed in less than 2 weeks and the iPod touch 6 is still on sale, I'm 99% sure it's getting iOS 13.

Ah yes. Thanks for reminding me about that. I'm pretty sure they introduced the 5th gen Touch without a back camera to replace the 4th gen.

I can imagine the 5S, iPhone 6, and iPod touch 6 will run iOS 13 terribly if they do get the update.
