So my father wants to trade in his mini 4 for a new iPad. He wants to go with the Pro rather than the low end iPad because he wants to get something that has 256gb of storage to store his family history documents and a lot of his medical apps but doesn't want to pay as much for the refurbished 10.5 pro. Is the 9.7 pro still a good purchase in anyone's opinion in 2018/2019? I want him to get something decent but affordable.

The refurb 256GB Pro 9.7 is $589 while the Pro 10.5 is $679. At those prices, I'd stretch the budget to get the 10.5. While the Pro 9.7 is still decent, the A10X is a marked improvement in terms of performance (CPU, GPU, RAM) and power efficiency.

I think $589 is kinda overpriced for the Pro 9.7.

And the ProMotion alone is worth it to get the 10.5. After experiencing it on my 11, I can’t look at the 9.7 pro the same way anymore. Of course, that depends on if the OP’s father notices/cares about that. I find ProMotion to be easier on the eyes.

I’d say not worth it at $589, but I’d be surprised if that’s the best price out there. It’s still very capable, so I’d just look for a good price.

Not worth $589. Not even close. I agree with everyone else by going with the 10.5. I love mine. Like everyone else has said, ProMotion is a huge bonus to the iPads.

I have a 9.7” pro and it is still a great iPad.
However, I agree with everyone else on the ProMotion being an amazing improvement and I would probably upgrade just for that if it wasn’t that I’d be worried about all the reports of a light spot developing on the 10.5 screens. I don’t know how widespread the problem really is though.

I asked the same thing before I bought a 10.5, and there were a lot of people that told me they had their iPads for over a year and never got a spot. The ones that got one, and then their replacement got one, then claimed that ‘Well obviously all of them get them and this is inevitable!’ are making that bit up, because it isn’t inevitable. If you’re truly worried, get AppleCare (which I would get anyway). I do hope enough people come forward so Apple acknowledges it and launches an official repair program, that would definitely give me some piece of mind, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be all of them right now. -knock on wood-
