I've been watching more iTunes HD content (on my new 1080 LED tv...the older 1080 LCD tv broke a week back) and I am somewhat amazed at the quality of the HD streams. I know others will tell me how awful my eyesight is, how much banding and loss of "X" i have digitally instead of with a Disc but — ehh. I can see banding at times. I think the AppleTV displays crisper than my Fios or Comcast TV via digital boxes. and I can tell the 720 vs 1080 networks and how stuff on ABC isn't as nice as stuff on CBS. though the streams on the AppleTV of ABC shows do look to be at 1080.

We upgraded the ATV 3 with an ATV4 this past Christmas. moved the ATV3 to the basement for the kids. I am pleased with them. The idea of a 4K ATV is not for me now without a 4K TV but glad to hear others will be getting that upgrade.

I truly agree, I've always been very happy with the picture quality of iTunes films in HD! (and Vimeo - I like buying film on Vimeo as there is no DRM, so I can give a copy to a friend :)

Nice choice!!! Definitely my choice mind you, i've been loving ATV since aTV2 wayyyyy back in the winter of 2010!!! I find the ATV experience to be flawless and headache free - it's a real pleasure to use!

Did you buy every Apple TV? The 2,3, and 4th generation?
What did you do with e older ones?

I really want a 4K capable Apple TV and have been holding out for it.
I'm temped to buy the 4th generation ATV now a d then sell it on ebay as soon as the ATV5 is released. I wonder if this is a sensible move at this point....

Apple is so far behind on image quality, they've virtually signaled abandonment.

Only if you are always after the latest and greatest. At some point when you are older you will discover that your "old" audio and video resolutions are completely adequate and get back to what really matters...content quality.

I can't see the difference being honest as 1080HD from both iTunes and Vimeo look outstanding on my 40" 4K HDR TV and MacBook Retina etc. For me, BluRay isn't an option. I left CDs behind in 2000 and DVDs again 2010. For me, it's all about MULTI PLATFORM and that's were downloading/streaming comes in. I'm used to reading on my MacBook and iPhone and Apple TV so of course, I want to do the same with a film. I didn't want a cheap looking BluRay player that looks like something from 1986. For me, the Apple way is beautiful. It's reliable, it has a beautiful user interface etc PLUS with Apple CarPlay, I have the same UI in a car! :) (out of interest, I asked a few friends 19 years of age with young eyes, if they noticed a difference between Apple TV and BluRay and they said no. One commented that some BluRay look amazing and some awful, so it depends on the film I guess but yes, a 1080p HD iTunes film can look incredible).

Also, when I travel to friend's apartments on a weekend, I can sign in to their Apple TV and my films, music etc all appear on it. They have a 55" SONY 4K TV and the Apple TV shines on it too.

For me, I LOVE iTunes for all of my music, playlists, surf videos and films. I've got rid of all of my old DVDs.

But it doesn't have to be one or the other. Buy the Apple TV and the chances are you'll be bowled over. You'll enjoy watching your photo albums/videos on the big screen. They look INCREDIBLE!!! Rent a HD film and see what you think. Remember very few people sit 6 inches away from their TV so the chances are, you'll love the picture quality.

With my older boxes, one I gave away and one is sat in a drawer in my apartment. I'm not into TVs in a home, so just one in my living rom is enough :) I'm not greedy :) Plus i'm a total outdoors person :)

Also don't buy a ATV4 now, chances are we may see the new ATV5 J105 in 4 weeks time at the iPhone launch :)

@Citizen Cook - We've just watched 'Bridget Jone's Baby' iTunes HD this evening and all of us were totally bowled over by the amazing picture quality and punchy sound. Absolutely incredible quality. Imagine what that will look like with a iTunes 4K HDR version :)
Would be incredible if Apple offer 24FPS detection on the new ATV5 J105 (slight jerkiness on the occasional panning) but maybe that's asking too much.

The fact that they specifically mentioned that iPad Pro can now play back video recorded at 24FPS I'd say its a sure bet that the new Apple TV will offer this.

I'm at the point where I simply don't have any more shelf capacity for more blu ray discs. Having all of my movies stored on the cloud is incredibly seductive idea to me.
I already buy all ofmygames and music digitally, film is the holdout.

WOW that would be incredible John! It would be a truly remarkable product wouldn't it!

Yes, same with me. I fell in love with iTunes for my music, I was able to buy music that i'd wanted since childhood and make the best playlist. Again, it travelled with me on my iPhone. It worked seamlessly with Pioneer CDJ decks for DJ'ing etc. Then I started downloading surfing videos from Vimeo & YouTube and putting them in iTunes etc and before I knew it, I had everything in one place. For me just amazing as I could move to another country and take everything with me just on my MacBook etc :)
I love it. No more lost CDs or cases with discs missing etc. The Apple way is very very nice. It's easy to forget. I was reminded last night when I was watching video on a friends Samsung S7 Edge phone. I hated it! It was so plasticky and the Android operating system was slow. It lacked class in comparison. I know that i've made the right choice :)
But certainly buy the Apple TV and do what we do - rent a film in iTunes and if you love the film, then you can decide if you want to buy it in iTunes or BluRay :)
