They were even more transparent (that should be "translucent") back in the early days of Leopard.
These menus are transparent all the time. When you look at the screen from an angle it appears darker, so you're more likely to notice it. Trust me, I've looked at my screen from all possible distances and angles (I have an Air with lines).
OSX menus have always been translucent - all the way back to the public beta. They've reduced the translucency since then (as well as the pinstripes) until in Leopard it's hardly noticeable at all, but this isn't a new feature or easter egg. How transparent they look depends on the brightness setting and angle of your screen.
Here's a public beta screen showing the tranlucency in the menu (sorry it's in Japanese, but it's the only one I could find).
jx
It is transparent. It's not rocket science =)
EDIT: Well, I shouldn't have used the word transparent. It is just not opaque. =)
I thought this was common knowledge. But looking at it now I can see how it would be easily overlooked depending on the display/background.
And the right-click menus are also transparent/translucent in the same manner.
Lol, I was actually being serious though. Like shift your head to view your macbook pro from the side. The drop down menu appears transparent. Well in any case, is it transparent or solid for you guys?
It depends on what is behind the menu.
I don't see why it would be so hard to turn the transparency up higher. We just need to find the files.
I'd really like to know where they are too.
They'll probably be in the hard disk's Library or System folders.
I figured. But that's a large amount of files. We need file names..
If you're interested, I posted on Apple's discussion board here.
I noticed that when I click on theor one of the other menus at the top, it seems to be solid white, but when I move my head to view it from the side, it appears transparent. Is this normal?
