These menus are transparent all the time. When you look at the screen from an angle it appears darker, so you're more likely to notice it. Trust me, I've looked at my screen from all possible distances and angles (I have an Air with lines) ;).

Thank you for being serious, I was about to say the same thing.

I thought this was common knowledge. But looking at it now I can see how it would be easily overlooked depending on the display/background.

And the right-click menus are also transparent/translucent in the same manner.

OSX menus have always been translucent - all the way back to the public beta. They've reduced the translucency since then (as well as the pinstripes) until in Leopard it's hardly noticeable at all, but this isn't a new feature or easter egg. How transparent they look depends on the brightness setting and angle of your screen.

Here's a public beta screen showing the tranlucency in the menu (sorry it's in Japanese, but it's the only one I could find).

Wow that brings me back!
I still have the Public Beta somewhere, and a machine that'll run it.
I might need to have a play at the weekend.

It is transparent. It's not rocket science =)

EDIT: Well, I shouldn't have used the word transparent. It is just not opaque. =)

I believe the word you're looking for is translucent or semi-transparent.

And I know the transparency is really low, but I can't believe people don't notice this, it's not like the menu's are really small.

Yeah, I have no idea why everyone is WTF-ing? How can you not notice it?

Yeah. There was a thread about this somewhere. If you go back to the original Leopard, you'll see that the context menus (right click menus) are more translucent than they are now. At some point, Apple updated them so that they are nearly opaque. Why they did this, we don't know. I don't think there was ever a very bad issue with readability, and the transluscency added some eye candy to the screen.

I want to make my menus more transparent. I really miss the way the OS X 10.0 Betas were. Everything looked so exciting...
Even in 10.5.0-10.5.2 it was still good, and then... Why did they do it? It doesn't match with the semi-transparent menubar and it really aggravates my pursuit for perfection!
I also hate how they've progressively toned down Aqua, although I've gotten Leopard to look pretty again like its predecessors Panther and Tiger.

It depends on what is behind the menu.

I don't see why it would be so hard to turn the transparency up higher. We just need to find the files.

Lol, I was actually being serious though. Like shift your head to view your macbook pro from the side. The drop down menu appears transparent. Well in any case, is it transparent or solid for you guys?

I don't know about the transparency but if you can forward me what ever drug you're using it would be much appreciated.

Pre-10.5.1 Leopard's menus were much more transparent than they are now. I remember there was a huge rant about it on these forums somewhere. It's probably still ongoing.
