Not obsolete

From magical to obsolete in two years. That has to be a record, even by Apple's standards!

No, the iPad 1 is not obsolete. It is still a very good tablet. Much better than several of the alternatives. You can still watch youtube, surf the net, do your mailing, write documents and so on. Even play a lot of games if you are into that. It is only that the newer versions are even better. But the first gen will still be perfectly good for many years to come. So the question is, do you need the very latest top model, or is budget part of the equation?

It is, sort of, like, the top speed of your car. Sitting in a commuter queue in your new Ferrari will not get you faster to the job than your average Ford. Both are cars, both do a job.

So, Let him try something different. He may really like the tab 2. The ipad 1 is just simply not worth buying. Apple made a bad mistake by only giving it 256mb of ram. It simply was too little.

Its not like hes not gonna be happy when he opens up a 200 dollar gift even if its not apple.
We have both a Tab 2 and iPad2.

The Tab 2 isn't all that great, unless you really like doing everything from scratch. You have to figure out everything, even with ICS. Nothing is just...there. The Samsung apps are meh, so you want to load in standard Google or other stuff. It takes ages just to get up and running with basic stuff like the mail and browser apps you want, since they are probably not the ones loaded on there to start.

The iPad (orig) is just fine. For the right price, it is still a good deal. If iOS6 doesn't offer enough, don't upgrade it. That is ok, you know. I would probably buy the iPad2 for my kids at this point, though. And the 3 for me.

^then wait for the nexus tablet. It will have stock android and a tegra 3 quad core. The first ipad simply is not worth buying. Apple should have gave iut atleast 512mb of ram like the iphone 4. Your reasons about having to install another email app are bogus as well. The stock email app would have worked fine for the nephew of the original poster. And you have an iPad 2 not an ipad 1. Theres a huge difference.

Maybe he doesn't want a 7 inch tablet?

My mom uses her ipad 1 mainly for email, facebook, web browsing, words with friends type stuff with no problems at all. One of my buddies uses his ipad 1 for messaging, maps, email, facebook, and games without any problems. I'd say its still totally useable and worth getting (at the right price of course). Unless your nephew is a giant Apple fanboy who posts on apple forums all the time then he might complain about it. :D
