*edit* I mean Galaxy S5

My pops decided to put iPhones aside and give Android a try. This caught me off guard when we went to the Sprint store to get our new phones, so we really didn't get a chance to do research. We picked it based on demoing the phones at the store, and the opinions of the staff.

Was it a good pick, over the note and the m8?

Or should he wait and exchange it for the S6 which will be out before his 14 day exchange period is over?

the s6 isn't out yet, so what your people got is the s5?

s6 is better than note 4 and m8, but s6 isn't out yet... at least not here?

How can one smartphone be better than another in general?
For ME and my needs/taste the N4 is better than the S6.

I'm on a family plan, my whole family got new phones.

And I meant the S5. I thought of the S6 because the employee mentioned it would be coming out in a few days.

And his 14 day exchange trial means that if the S6 is much better he could exchange the S5 for the S6.

The Galaxy S5 is not the best android handset. By a mile.

S5 is ok but it sold worst of all the galaxies for a reason. S6 looks however to be great and possibly the best android handset - at least for 6 months.

So if he opted for an S5 instead of an S6 - then yes he should take it back and go for the S6.

That being said - as it's not your phone - he may like it and be entirely content with the device. So maybe you should simply ask your pop's what he thinks of it ? Surely that's the more important thing than anything a random stranger here can profer on a device which you now claim only your pop has.

S5 wasn't the best in 2014. Note 4 was better.

S6 might be the best once released in 2015 with a more future-proof SoC from Samsung. Perhaps S6 will endure better and be the best until the Snapdragon 820 and Samsung's Exynos 7 series successor are released. Best in the first half of 2015.

Best is relative, but three phones come to mind as the clear heads and shoulders better devices: Nexus 6, Note 4, and Moto X 2014. Each provide top of the line specs and a bunch of exclusive features for each. The Moto X is the most practical of all three devices.

Don't forget the M8 and G3. Really, the S5 was probably the worst choice to get right now, especially with the S6 and M9 a week away from release. Unless he got a crazy good deal, or he absolutely needs the water proofing, he should take it back.

Can't put the M8 up there because of the lack of a good camera. The G3 would be up there, but the battery, screen, and lag create a nasty combo. I have never had a phone that tones down brightness automatically due to potential "heating" just because of the brightness level.

Definitely take the S5 back.

With the S6, I'm a bit disappointed with the initial battery life reports, but other than that it seems excellent.

I'd put the Z3 as a contender up there with the alternatives that have already been mentioned in this thread.

As the S6 is only days away from release I'd exchange the S5 for the S6. To be honest I'm not really interested in other android phones. I've tried LG and I didn't like it. The nexus line seems bland to me, Motorola, HTC et al they just don't interest me. I think the S5 is a good phone. I've owned it in the past. It would be in my top 3 android phones alongside the note 4 and S6.

In its size range, tough to compete with the S6 currently if positive reviews come to fruition.

In the phablet range probably which isn't fair to compare, I opted for the Nexus 6 and Note 4 regardless.

You listed the Note so what is your plan for the smartphone? Does size really matter then since you listed it, so if the plan is videos and games and browsing more than just occasionally then you better go bigger than the S6.
