No, the iPad 2 does way more than a college freshman could ever hope to.

My iPad+JB+dropbox+camera-card(+32gb SDXC card)+zaggmate = notebook replacement - use it when away from home, at work, on the tube for reading! Invaluable

However, it can not replace my MBP at home, for pro docs editing, writing reports, pros spreadsheets, powerpoint etc

Get a 13" MBA for now, later whn u have the $$ get a used ipad for reading/surfing/emails/games.
