I do think the iPhone is losing its 'cool' status.

Apple needs to change it up. We've been working with basically the same phone since 2007.

Also, why are people taking this question so personally?

Many would say it has lost its 'cool' status years ago. But I personally don't care about whether it is cool or not.

Here's my take on the coolness of iPhone,

So when the first iphone came out, I knew noting about it, in till my local news reported about it, I knew of apple, just for computers, but any ways. I could not Afford the first iphone on AT&T, I think it was $500 or somthing like that on contract 2yrs. So I forgot about it, even when iPhone 3G came out I never even know that it was out lol. So a year or so later I end up getting my first iphone (the 3GS White) Again Not Knowing Within a Month The apple will be Releasing The iPhone 4, "back to my 3GS" so I feel in love with the iPhone & with every thing it could do, The OS. The SmoothNess, The Snappy Safari lol. Anyways I googled about the iPhone 4, I found out it does everything the 3GS does plus more so I just have to have it, not because, I thought it was cool, Because I thought the phone was beautiful, new Design all glass, so I got it on launch day, wanted white, But at the time Apple is having hard time making the white iPhone, so I got black i4. So at that think, I started to become more of an apple Fanatic, where if I had to have somthing I'd prefer it to be Apple, lol. Because apple made me feel cool. Like when some people own Louis Vuitton they feel rich, lol. So I own 4S & Now iPhone 5 haha & I will own the Next iPhone Too,
Sometimes People Say, Oh you rich yeah, because u always own the newest iphone, I say no Because I working minimum payment job, I just SAVE UP, I tell them key word SAVE lol,

Blah blah end of my story.

I was gonna say something about the way this post was written, but I won't ;)

You're definitely right though, both in iPhone not being a rich man's phone and in saving gives you access to things that could be considered expensive. More people should reason like you. Respect!

Agreed, I noticed in my commute that younger adults and teenagers were sporting more android type phones, particularly the samsung models over the iPhone. Is this an exhaustive scientific test of course not, but anecdotal experiences is showing folks are choosing other devices.

Some people don't care of its losing its cool, but I think in the world of marketing you really want to remain cool and have eye catching designs, otherwise consumers will think your products are dated and want more modern devices.

I think it lost it's cool status once the price dropped from 599 to 399, then to 199. Then again, with the amount of food stamp recipients you see at the likes of LV and Gucci nowadays, they were going to get it eventually.

As far as "the phone to own:" it's quickly losing that status. Just from what I've noticed, more and more people are leaving iPhone for the likes of galaxy and other higher end androids.

Yeah, who would want to own a phone that those disgusting food stamp recipients would own. How déclassé! Those low life people, ripping off the SNAP program and buying all that LV and Gucci stuff...really, what's the world coming to for us people of quality.

I feel your pain...:(

OK, at the risk of my post as somehow being interpreted as sarcastic, I'll say it directly and without irony...that's a really sad and pathetic post.

I don't buy things, such as the iPhone to be cool or to have the latest cool thing. I like the iPhone and have one, but for me it's a tool to help me do things and provide a limited amount of entertainment. I don't carry it to impress others that I can afford it because they probably don't care that I have one, just as I don't care what they have.

I get what you mean, OP, and I think that in the eyes of people who care about that part of the package, yes, part of that effect has now worn off.

People who are into a gadget because they are into new technology will probably always think this kind of thing is cool, because they appreciate the possibilites it gives or gave at the time.

Ultimately, I think this applies to anything. Lots of things are cool where they're new, especially when they set new industry standards. Down the line, these standards might be picked up by other companies in other gadgets, and as a result they lose some cool factor that's based on their newness.

So I guess it's not just the iPhone, it's life in general. :p

It lost its "cool" or exclusive status that you're speaking of once it became available outside of AT&T. When it was AT&T exclusive, everyone who had one HAD to be on AT&T and HAD to be paying over $100 per month for their service. Now that it's on all the other carriers, everyone can have one and it seems like everyone does. Doesn't bother me since I buy iPhones because I feel they're the best devices, not to look "cool".

You might be right. Sporting an iPhone in Europe when it was only sold in the states was definitely a statement, it was a conversation starter even.

You know whats cool about the iPhone. It works. It does so elegantly without stutter. The apps run seamlessly and without lag. Everything that the iPhone does, it does better than any other. Can some android phones do more? Yes, but anything that the iPhone can do, it does better than any other phone. I have the new HTC One and the Galaxy S4 sitting here beside me. I have used these phones extensively, but in the end. The iPhone is my go to device. From these two devices there is only two things that I like more than the iPhone. The ir blasters and the apps that accompany them are awesome. The Zoes feature on the HTC one is a great addition for photos.

is Apple losing its cool

Sad to say, but yes it is. The models need to be updated yearly with new innovations added to it. Samsung does this all the time.

If your a widget loving, laggy wanting, no ecosystem oddball then its not cool. If you value apps that are made for you phone, high quality, a ecosystem, customer service that has no rival, and awesome no lag use ability then its cool.....I forgot if your into bumping your phone into others or the ability to, if you place your hand at the perfect distance from the phone, swipe to replicate gestures then the iphone is not cool.

I buy what I like, and I use to care what people think and here is why. Some people who were Apple fans gave the perception they were better, Apple was the best, and all others are junk. I had my Macbook for months before anyone knew, and same with my iPhone.

Now I see Microsoft and Android fanboys are the same way. If you don't like Apple, I don't care. Now if you don't like Apple because you don't know how to work a Mac, to me that's just stupid. I know a few people like this sadly, and yet refuse to learn it, because it's easier to hate what you don't understand.

When people ask me if they should get an iPhone, I tell them get what they like. I don't push anything on them based on what I have. I tell them I am happy with my iPhone overall, but tell them what I don't like about it also. If they or anyone buys anything just because "it's cool" they are a moron and need to get their priorities straightened out.

In other words, they need to have the same priorities as you. If they don't, they're morons?

I think you mean unique, rather than cool.

I definitely think that it was much more unique to have an iPhone until like the iPhone 4.

When the iPhone 4S launched, it was only then when they started selling tens of millions of iPhones a quarter.

I care about my phone's cool status about as much as I care about the cool status of my silverware. It's a tool and a toy. Nothing more.

I thought my BMW Z3 was cool when it first came out. Then I picked up a buddy for golf, but we could only fit one set of golf clubs in the car and suddenly my car wasn't so cool anymore.

On the other hand; he golfed with Ping clubs rather than Callaway so he wasn't cool either.

There is no moral to that story. It sounds just as stupid if you're talking about smartphones though.

There's a difference between buying a phone because it's cool, and buying a phone because you think it will make you look cool. Honestly, I think the tech contained in the iPhone is cool. Do I think the phone makes me look cool? Of course not.

I didn't say that, but if people put a phone or any material things out there before loved ones and life, maybe they are a moron.
Look at all these people who cry they have no money but yet have to have the "coolest" thing out there and buy it when they don't have the money for it.

Purchasing things you can't really afford because you should use the money to pay for food and rent, or to complain about not having money because you spend it on consumer goods, is not the same thing as buying things based on brand and perceived status though ;)

For instance, loads of rich people wear watches from designer houses despite these watches being absolute crap and in no way worth what they cost, because of the brand that's on there. They buy it because they like the design and because what they feel wearing it represents. Is that moronic according to you?

I wouldn't buy a cellphone basesd on its 'cool status' And I think that the majority of people will agree with me. I like a piece of technology that has good features, speed, options etc. Buying a cellphone for its 'cool' aspect is ridiculous.
