Is the iPhone okay in your pocket without a screen protector?

I have a nice leather case for my iPhone, but no screen protector yet (coming later this week). Would you say it's safe to put the iPhone in my pocket and not have to worry about scratches? Of course it'd be the only thing in my pocket, but still... I can be a bit paranoid when it comes to handling a $600 device.

The reason I ask is I'd like to actually take my iPhone out with me without having to baby it outside of my pocket the entire time.

I keep mine in my pants pocket without anything else in there, and I find that it helps the screen more than anything, because as I walk, the screen rubs against my leg and wipes off smudges.

That's how I roll with my iphone and no scratches yet. Car keys in the right pocket, only the iphone in the left.

Very cool! All the replies give me great confidence. I also asked my dad if his is fine and he says yes. It looks like my iPhone is going out with me in the morning. :D Thanks!

yup, same thing here. I think the only extra protection a case may provide is from drops, but to me its still not worth putting ANY case on.

Now downside to putting on a screen protector

By all reports the screen is extremely scratch resistant. But, why take even the smallest risk? The crystal film set they sell at the Apple stores is amazing. You can not tell it is there, except that the screen stays a bit cleaner...

It does not interfere with the touch screen in the slightest bit. Though overpriced for what it is, $15 is still nothing compared to the cost of the phone and the service plan.

Also note, there was a thread here where somebody reported scratching their screen with sand (that is what glass is made of after all). So if for example you go to the beach, and get a bit of sand in your pocket, you may wish you had shelled out the $15.

I took my iPhone out on the beach the other day. No problems here though. I have a leather case that I use with it, but it's the kind that leaves the screen open (Leather CaseMate). I don't think you'll have any problems with an unprotected iPhone in your pocket.

remeber the iPhone screen is made of GLASS not plastic like 99% of other cell phones. It is similar to the face of a watch, VERY difficult to scratch, but it can happen in certain situations

The only thing to watch out for when putting in your pocket is lint. It doesn't matter if it sticks to the screen, as that can easily be wiped off, but it can get trapped in the small crevice between the edge of the glass and the chrome rim.

Every one who sees my iPhone is really concerned that I dont have a case. They are more worried about it scratching then I am.

I keep it in my pocket and it doesnt have a scratch on it. As nice as when I took it out of the box. I only dropped it once(so far) and it still looks and works fine.

I would be more carefull if I was going to the beach or some place where dirt got in my pocket. Then I would protect it, but I think its too beautiful a device to hide in a case.

no scratches on mine, and I'm not very religious about keeping it out of pockets with keys. On a side note I was in the apple store today and a teenage girl was arguing with one of the apple store geniuses demanding that they replace her phone after SHE dropped it and the screen shattered. So it is clearly not indestructable, or teenage proof, but scratch resistant...I think so.

After a week of taking the iPhone in and out of my pocket, I still don't see any scratches. That's not to say that it won't scratch, but I think people are getting a bit paranoid about this issue.

I ordered just the back cover of the Invisible Shield, but I'm not sure I'll even bother putting it on. Right now, I just don't see the need.

Besides, I figure noticeable scratches would just give me a conversation piece to use at some point :)

I have used the clarivue screen protector since June 29th and its working out really well. You get two for the price and cant even see it on the iphone.

I keep my iPhone in my right pocket with my headphones and the cloth, and I noticed today three tiny scratches on the screen. Not sure if this is from keeping it in my pocket or from something else. I did drop it once, but it feel on a leather case so that probably didn't do it.

Luckily they are barely noticeable, and will probably bother me relentlessly for the next few days till I get over them. :p

The camera lens doesn't appear to be as durable as rest of the hardware. Even though I have been extremely careful, the camera lens glass has 3 streaks/scratches. Well, I am guessing they are scratches since they are not coming off with included cleaning cloth (perhaps liquid-based cleaning solution will work). Anyway, images taken with the camera seem to be unaffected and I don't use iPhone's camera much, so I will live with it.
