I rate the whole experience a 3 out of 10.
Even the iPhone 4 when I first used it felt really SIMPLE and FUN to use and MAGICAL as well. But iOS 11 on iPhone X is so confusing and too many bugs for it to be on a $1000+ device.
I am not liking Apple's direction. Too many flaws for such an expensive phone. It's easier to hold than the plus models but the 4.7 was the perfect size to hold.
7 years later after the iPhone 4 and there isn't really much of an update to it to make it feel magical to use.
In my opinion the iPhone 4 to iPhone 5 was an excellent update. HUGE camera upgrade and RAM as well as the speed.

iPhone X refreshes even more than the iPhone 6S and 7 even tho the X has 1gb of ram MORE.
I mean come on.... I feel very disappointed in the software part and the whole $1000 price tag.
The hardware is good. But there's more cons to it than pros. Like not having touch ID and many other things aren't really updated. The cameras still produces the terrible water painting filter. Mono microphone and the battery life is TERRIBLE.

People use devices like smartphones for some sort of magical amusement experiences? As opposed to everyday tools that they are?

Not sure how the X is "terrible." Other than few gestures that we actually already familiar with, the overall experience still feels like an iPhone. I mean seriously, other than some basic gestures (like swiping up is going Home instead of invoking control center), it's just an iPhone. I get to handle the X for a few minutes in an Apple store, and I already get accustomed to it.
Yes, iOS11 still need to be worked on, but it's the nature of every software, especially with the OS and hardware becoming more complex.

Sorry... I know your post is serious, but when you described the X as the “least amusing” this is what came to mind. :p

iOS has overly precious and becoming less and less useable over time. From the thin, lightweight icons, to the white background, to the diminutive target areas for tapping and dragging. It’s a chore to use.

Here’s one small example: quitting apps. Before iOS7, the full page of the app was shown in the switcher. It was a huge target and easy to close by swiping up. Then it became a smaller thumbnail on the carousel, which made it very easy to accidentally scroll instead of quit. Now on the X you actually have to tap an X to dispense an app!

Oh and don’t get me started on the gesture to bring up the app switcher on the iPhone X. Ugh.

You don’t have to tap the X, just swipe it up off the screen.

My experience is not nearly what yours is for the amount of complaints and or issues you are experiencing, which my suggestion is for you to return/sell your iPhone X if it's that much of a hassle for you. It's clearly not for you.

My experience is good so far. There's nothing much i hate about it. If you don't like return it or sell it.

To me i like the X and don't plan to go back to any other smartphone.

This.

The OP clearly has an Android device and is spurting verbiage he's read elsewhere to ruffle feathers. To say iOS11 on the X is confusing is, quite frankly, utterly ridiculous. It's intuitive, and swiping up feels more natural that clicking a button that you have to place a finger on for recognition.

Moving along now. Next?

Let me guess, you're trying to open the app switcher by swiping up and pause for a bit? There's a better way, that feels even quicker than it did with the home button: just swipe diagonally OR swipe up and then swipe immediately to the right (like an upside down 'L').

Works fantastic this way.

In spite of my frustrations with ApplePay and some other aspects of the UI, the X is really a game-changer. I was using it alongside my 7 last night because I'm trying to figure out whether I want to go back to the 7. Going back to the 7 isn't crazy at all, but damn, the X is a really seductive experience. On the fence...

The only thing I don’t like is having to swipe down from the top for the control center. Other than that, it’s an evolutionary step forward from the button phones.
