If you want a Mac, then you'll be hard pressed to do any repair yourself. Apple has been moving in a direction that really decreases your ability to repair the computer. The MBPs are probably the most restrictive but that doesn't mean the MacPro is that much better.

I'd look to see what machine best fits your needs, get the AppleCare extended warranty which buys you two more years of coverage (on top of the existing one year warranty) and not worry about repairs.

If you like to tinker and tear computers apart then the Mac is probably not the computer for you

HOWEVER you can get an older Mac Pro and have a rocking system, and the ability to 'tinker' a little. It's far more able to be upgraded and customized than the new trash can Mac Pro. Oh, and a WHOLE LOT less expensive. Plus, with no slots, the new Mac Pro means that to really use it from a power user standpoint likely means having to add expensive add-on bits...

I'm impressed with the new Mac Pro, however it's out of my foreseeable future... Well, unless I marry rich, or a Brinks truck drops a huge bag of unmarked bills at my feet.

EDIT: Reading the previous posts, the mini is a good system. It's flexible, powerful, small. I've got one that I use as a music server, and also to record audio, and it works extremely well.

If you have the cash for a Mac Pro, and want to show it off, get one. But buying a Lamborghini to drive to the grocery store is way overkill, and not fair to the ponies bottled up in that beast (speaking of the car). Or the groceries, or an SO, because there isn't a lot of room in it to haul groceries and a mate. :)
