The 13" rMBP dropped $400 off the price between revisions. If this rMB were to do the same, it'd slot perfectly into the $999 price point. Apple is selling this first version at a higher cost to amortize R&D, then they'll be able to sell a newer version at a lower price. That's what I think anyway.

So you think they are counting on refurbished models to sell at the $999?

I don't think so. They need to sell brand new laptops at $999, not used ones.

No, my post you quoted was taking about price drops on new models. As pointed out by an earlier replier, I was off on the 13" model, as it's starting price is now $999, not $1099 as I posted.

Not every post in a thread is a reply to the thread title. Mine wasn't. And just to make sure everyone understood that, I actually QUOTED what I was replying to. Here it is again. Perhaps you'll manage to miss it AGAIN and reply sarcastically to me for absolutely no reason apart from you not reading the post.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

LOL!!!!!! I knew what you replied to. And to consider that Air is being dumped very soon is just silly. It's like the people screaming "the end of Thunderbolt!!!" because ONE machine doesn't include it.

I am one who likes the current Air models. I've bought two machines- a Pro and an Air- and passed on retina both times because for my usage it just didn't seem worth the costs.

Now that there's a thinner, lighter MacBook, are they going to slowly kill the MBa?

Prediction:

The MBA will hang around for about a year, while we all get to find out how the single USB-C thing is going to work out. We'd probably have had the speed bump earlier if Intel's chips hadn't been late. They won't be getting retina displays.

2016 revamp of the MacBook Pros will see them switch to USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 (which is going to use new thinner connectors) and lower-wattage processors, and Mr Ive will shave another few millimetres off them.

Prices and specs will be juggled to make the entry MacBook cheaper than the entry rMBP.

At that point, adios MacBook Air.

Even today, I'd go for the 13" rMBP over the Air.

I don't think its dead, it will just be offered in the 11 inch model only I think, make it thinner and lighter than the new Macbook. Then you will have the 12 Macbook and 13/15 MBPs.

The Orginal MBA had to stay around because of price.

Apple calling it "MacBook" instead of "MacBook air with Retina Display" makes it pretty obvious that they plan to eventual make the new MacBook the replacement for their entry level Mac laptops.

What boggles my mind is why the 13" cMBP is still around. It should be dropped by now.

I believe the 13" cMBP is popular in education however seeing what happened to its price here and elsewhere it might not be for much longer.

Your post made me think. Apple will drop the Air when they can release a rMB at $999. It also aligns with my prediction of 2-3 years before they drop the Air.

I sure hope so. A MacBook Pro with USB-C ports, that force-touch trackpad, AND which still has MagSafe, scissor keys and the glowing logo would be a dream machine.

Apple needs an entry level Mac that is close to the $999 price point. The Retina MacBook isn't and I don't think it will at least for some more years to come.
