Here in Italy they will soon switch from actual codecs to the new ones and I will have to buy a new TV to upgrade my 10+ years old Sony Bravia 40" which is now connected to an ATV4 (no HD), I know new TV will probably have all the major apps built in so might no need a dedicated box but just wondering if the new ATV is worth the 200 bucks they ask for here in the old continent and what would it add to my old non HD ATV4.

Grazie

Well, our three year old Samsung 4K TV is limited with respect to the sound options - the 4K ATV 2021 fixed that!
If your next TV has all the options you need then guess you don't need an ATV.

If you get a new Sony Bravia it will probably come with Android TV 9 (or greater) installed. I recently upgraded my old Sony Bravia 40” 2008 model for a new 50” Sony Bravia. I still use my ATV 4K and Fire TV boxes with it, but I don’t really need to since it came with an app store that has Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and all the main streaming apps. Like the other post said, I would wait until getting the new TV to see if you need and/or want to purchase an ATV 4K.

I just bought a new ATV 4K which I’ll use with a new 4K TV I’ll get this fall (maybe an LG). I won’t connect the TV to the internet, I’ll just use the ATV for movies and such. We’ll also watch some sports over the air.

1. I don’t want all the spying that goes on with native TV apps. Also, I’m suspicious about the security of the TV. That may be a way for hackers to get into our home network. This will be an evolving topic in the near future.

2. ATV will get updates as needed, TVs don’t often get updated.

Not forgetting you need the bandwidth for app or ATV for 4K. Think mine can hit 30mb/s for a film, that is a ATV4k box, no idea what the app does. BBC iPlayer 4K via my ISP or disk player certainly hits that as does BT Sport on 4K. Though mid 20's is where the meter sits. Uncalibrated meter that is.
But my TV is too old for the apps, it could be a future upgrade as other mention. (that is when the TV apps are no longer updated or don't work).

If you need a cheap 4K option for various apps I use this for an older TV in the basement, no fancy options like our ATV 2021, but for steaming it works well:

Sort of invested in iTunes films, Apple does 4k very well and using Cheap Charts I get a lot of bargains (but no BBC 4k for UK users on the 1st 4K version, HLG this issue I think). If it were not for iTunes I would be tempted with another box should a TV need apps due to age, with certain provisions and a good 4k delivery is a must.
