The only reason it would be "obsolete" would be if it wasn't compatible with OS 3.0, but it is and gets to have the fun that the 3G and the upcoming iPhone will have. 🙂
I have a 3G iPhone on T-Mobile, so I can only use edge. I might as well have a 2G iPhone.
The only differences between the original and the 3G is that the original doesn't have 3G, GPS and isn't capable of MMS (at least according to Apple). Other than that it's the same and many people actually think the original is better built than the 3G.

If you buy a 3g iphone and don't live in a 3g area you'll be paying $10 extra dollars a month for nothing. If that's the case ya, your better off with the first gen iphone.

I have a 2G phone on T-Mobile and got a 2G on purpose because i have to use EDGE. The ONLY thing i wish my 2G did have was a louder speaker. Other than that, it rocks!
I already have a Garmin GPS so i dont need that in my phone. However, it shows me where im at anyways so im not missing much there.
