Why not? Hell, bring a pillow! As long as you don't fall asleep or put your hand down your pants I think the store staff will view your shopping experience as positive and memorable.

haha - well said.

OP - I often use my 13" MBP in bed and am wondering whether the perceived weight of the rMBP will be lighter than the 13" as it's spread over a larger surface area? Also, it would be like having a cinema screen in front of you I'd imagine.

Sadly, you can't but a MBA now you've seen the quality of the retina. Just can't. This time next year the whole line up will be probably be retina but until then it's the 15" rMBP or nothing as far as I'm concerned!!

I mean, the MBPR is actually ever-so-slightly lighter than the 13" MBP, so I wouldn't worry about weight if you're fine with the 13".

What I'm mainly worried about is whether the 15" would be as balanced as a 13" is due to its larger surface area.

I have the 2 laptops in my signature...personally, the problem when laying down flat using the retina is that the front edge of the laptop where you put your palms is a lot more uncomfortable to use then an Air on 13'' Pro. I've never had any balance issues, but the front edge makes it less enjoyable. Still completely usable though.

I might go for the air now till the 13 retina comes out. palm rest is really an issue when using it lying down.

You say you want a computer with an ssd? Why not replace the hdd with an ssd? You could always try using Arctic Silver 5 on your CPU and GPU of your current MBP.

If you want something more portable, as you said, but with power, the rMBP is the way to go. Although I don't own one, the fans are near silent according to 'tldtoday' on youtube. All computers will get hot, it just depends on what you do on them. An option, if you do purchase the rMBP is to put AS5 on it, if possible. It's the best cooling stuff for CPU's I've found and it reduces temperatures significantly, for me it was about 18 degrees celsius decrease.

If it's any help to you, I use my rMPB all evening on my lap while in a reclining chair, sometimes almost lying down with the machine propped up on one knee. Perfectly comfortable for several hours at a time. A bit of a surprise, really, as I've only ever done this before with an 11" laptop.

I've been working all week on the rMBP from the couch (it's nice to work from home btw), reclined with the laptop between my belly and legs. Totally comfortable and the edges aren't digging into my wrists as they used to with my '09 13" MBP.

Haven't noticed any increased eye strain as a result of the retina display, actually i think its easier on my eyes than my 13". Initially I thought the 15 would be too big, maybe its the smaller bezel or what but it just feels right.

Also I prefer the weight distribution when picking it up with one hand, on my 13" I was afraid the case would flex if I picked it up quickly by the side but this feels much more rigid.

hi, you have a point there about it being a hassle while moving it around while lying down. I do move it back and forth between my side table and onto the bed numerous times a night. Also now i am imagining that the wrist placement will be worse on the 15"(as it is wider) to use while lying down. on the 13" mbp, as im typing, my wrist goes to the sides near the corners, and bending down till the elbow meets the bed. and its kind of sharp on the wrist. This is a different position as opposed to someone who is sitting down on a chair with the laptop on a table.

Yep, I don't need the power for sure. I just thought that the retina display will make reading more comfortable and less straining. I get bad, temporary astigmatism whenever I read on the laptop intensively.

It's not just the retina MacBook Pro having sharp wrist, it's all the unibody having sharp wrist. Why can't they make it slightly curve? I think that would be beautiful!

I think you would enjoy the much better viewing angles when using it in bed over tha MBA.

hmm. have to go to the stores and check out the viewing angles. Didnt test it in the store the last time. good point

Like I said it's not unusable to me, I've used my Retina lately a lot just because it's new, and while it isn't as comfortable to use, I don't know if that would factor into a decision between one or the other. They're both great laptops though and you can't go wrong. But I think a 13'' Retina would hit the sweetspot for the majority of users.

I've got a Sony Vaio Z Series which is really light and comfortable to use in bed but I fancied something new.

Since there is no 13" retina I bought the 15" rMBP. I've been using them side by side in bed for the last 2 days and can confirm the rMBP is no where as comfortable to use in bed lying down. Sony Z 9/10. Apple rMBP 5/10.

The surface area is larger so it doesn't balance as nice. It's heavier and gets much hotter ..... I'm really trying to like the rMBP but I think I need\want is a 13" rMBAir which doesnt exist.

My rMBP is going back because of a yellow display.... I'm not sure I will re-order one as i'm still pleased with my Sony. I just fancied a better change which hasn't happened. Maybe wait another year.
