It never gets old listening to people who purchased the smart cover only to return it because it doesn't protect the back. I like mine but I'm not the type of person who is going to obsess about every little scratch on the back of it.

I LOVE my leather smart cover but honestly if Apple would not have given me mine for free, I would have probably sent it back. I have not seen the cheaper one and didn't get that because I thought maybe it was the same material as the first iPad case and I hated how dirty it got so I wanted the leather. As much as I love it I will probably look at some 3rd party ones that will be coming out that offer something for the back...

I have the blue poly Smart Cover. I really like it, the feel and the lightness and the unlocking feature. I like the feel of the iPad without a case, so the Smart Cover is good to add just a little protection to the screen while carrying it about the house or office. Might be a bit over priced but I think the quality is excellent. The leather one is way over priced for me.

For going outside for work in the field or traveling it is not good protection. I bought a case that offers more protection for taking it on trips. For transport between home and office, I have a neoprene slipcase that I slide the iPad into with it's Smart Cover attached.

The Smart Cover would be worth the price if you intend to buy another case for travel, but not worth it if you want one case for every situation. After all, it is a cover not a case.

I think most people that buy the smart COVER as a case are the ones who don't like it.

For me, it is the best iPad accessory yet. I preferred using my original iPad caseless, and it is the same with iPad 2. The cover allows me to have a small level of protection plus a stand without any extra bulk. I had the iPad 1 Apple case and did not like it at all, the flap always got in the way, it was annoying to put on and take off and whenever I set it up as a vertical stand my iPad would fall smack on its face.

The cover works extremely well as a stand in both orientations which is one of the main reasons why I like it. It also allows me to use the ipad without a case but still being able to put it down without getting scratches on the back (When using it on a table it is wrapped around the back, when not using it I put it face down. Using this method my iPad 2 still has no scratches on the back, which is much better than my iPad 1.

For me smart cover + a sleeve case is the perfect combo. Smart cover stays on all the time, sleeve case for when I put it in a bag or just take it with me.

I was reading through the thread and was about to post this exact message, almost word for word. Thanks for saving me the typing :)

But in all honesty, I was unsure about the smart cover as well, but I decided to get one because i had a 10 dollar best buy reward cert about to expire. I actually really like the smart covert now, especially as a stand for typing. In fact, I'm getting so used to having the smart cover act as my stand that I'm considering leaving the bt keyboard at home unless I really need to do some heavy composition.

I'd have loved a small magnet on the back side to hold the cover in place if it was wrapped around, otherwise it's great.

This. I have the gray poly and it's never came loose once and I have no problem folding it over the back when using my iPad.

I got the blue plastic one with my iPad2. I instantly didn't like it. My biggest peeve about it is how it flops around if you lose your grip on the back of it.

I returned it to Best Buy and got a Colcasac sleeve and a JustStickIt skin for the back; both of which I absolutely love. I got the Zagora sleeve and the black leather skin.

No, I bought it...returned it and ordered a portenzo case. Same price, magnets and it covers the back too.

I'll contradict myself here.

No, but I really like mine! :D

What I mean by that is at $40/70 it's definitely overpriced. But I really like the way it works. Tablets need to be as thin and light as possible IMO, otherwise I might as well stick with a laptop or netbook.

So I like that the smart cover keeps the screen covered while not in use and works well as a typing stand and a vertical video stand. I don't care that it doesn't cover the back as I just keep in a neoprene sleeve when putting it in a back etc. And I'm not anal about getting some scratches as I won't be a yearly upgrader anyway as my tablet uses are very basic and the iPad 2 already covers the vast majority of them.

So for my needs, the smart cover is great. Priced a bit too high like all apple (and other company first party) accessories. But I can live with it as it fits my needs well. I didn't like the iPad 1 Apple case much at all as I prefer a tablet naked or very close to it.
