Is the Ultra display much bigger than 45 mm?

Which in my opinion isn’t that much considering the new case size.

The screen of 8 is curved. The screen of the Ultra is flat, which makes a difference in usable space. You need to look at the over all pixel count difference, which is more than 1.84%.

It is what it is. Screen size is 1143 sq mm on S8 and 1164 sq mm on Ultra.
The watch has gone up 8.89% in size but the screen got only 1.84% bigger.
That’s pretty bad. And I don’t get why.
And you can see this looking at the watch.
But I get it. The majority in here is all over the Ultra.
Me too at first but after looking at the specs and realizing the display is pretty much the same size as the normal watch I am pretty disappointed.
And you can see it just looking at the watch with its thick borders. Just doesn’t look as good as the S8.

I’m assuming it’s about battery life. They needed to stuff a lot more battery into a larger case to power the same screen size for twice as long.
Yes, a curved screen vs a flat screen does make a difference. If you don’t understand, fine. The extra pixels on the Ultra should allow for a couple more complications.

I was thinking the same but now I really believe he’ll buy one within 3 months.
The actual screen of the S7/8 is flat. It’s only the glass that is curved on the outside. It doesn’t make any difference for the display size you are looking at. And the specs are from the OLED panel itself and not the crystal on top.
Also more pixels≠more space.
I doubt there will be more complications. You could but the overall watch face would need to get smaller to fit more complications. Because….. the display only got marginal bigger in size.
I absolutely understand that some will like and want the new Ultra for all sorts of reasons. But for a bigger display they are going to be disappointed. For a larger piece of glass / screen with chunky odd bezels as they don’t appear uniform somehow you got it, ditto battery life and better GPS, again understandable reasons.
I‘ve gone SS Graphite as it to my yes looks nice and stylish and with a subtle bit of understated bling. The Ultra looks ungainly especially on a small wrist and unless you are using it as it’s meant to be for more extreme sports then it’s a bit of a miss.
Apple has always been about features, elegance and above all style. The Ultra just doesn’t have any of that to my eyes, I’d love to know what Ive thinks about it, I bet he is having a right laugh.

‘It is all eye of the owner. Everyone has choice. I am glad you picked and are happy with a 8 but I have owned all,the Apple Watches and ready for a change. I lost one of my series 7 due to water damage and I have been scared of getting the Apple replacement wet, ever since. With the Ultra I will not worry about anything hurting it. It does have additional features and I like it.
I bought the Ultra for me because I like it, not to please others. If I find I do not like it I will get an 8 but since they no longer do the Ti with DLC coating, it would be a let down/downgrade for me.
There are about 7.3% percent more pixels on the Ultra. That could certainly accommodate more complications.

That’s what I was thinking when looking at pics. Alt of the display is not used on the ultra. It’s to thick for my liking. I only like my women thick. But anyways. I habe the series 6 up for upgrade. Do y’all think an upgrade from 6 to 8 is good. How is the screen of the 8 compared to the 6
This isnt a great comparison because it’s using dark mode or whatever they call it. It hides the bezels. Here’s a better example that shows the bezels.
The math doesn't seem to add up in this thread. The 49mm screen is almost 9% larger diagonally than the 45mm and 10% larger than the 44mm. The square mm numbers that have been quoted show the 45mm screen as almost 17% larger the 44mm but it is only 2% larger on the diagonal. The much larger 49mm screen is shown as 19.4" larger.
Clearly this is nonsense.
Okay, An Ultra display measured in London and the AW8 display measured in New York. The measurements appearing to happen at the same time to an observer on Earth, will appear to have occurred at slightly different times to an observer on an airplane flying between London and New York. So, not only is there a display measurement difference to calculate, there is also a potential relative time difference between the two watches to be taken into account.

I'm pretty sure you are confusing case and screen size. the Ultras case is 49mm vertically not diagonally. The ultra screen is probably something like 33mm on the diagonal.
That’s not correct. The new display is 1.8% larger than the 45mm Series 8. Exactly. The jump from 44mm Series 6 to 45mm Series 7/8 was just under 17%.

It looks like apple is doing percents by pixels which is indeed 7% difference.
Certainly not. Because it’s just more pixels but not more display area.
You would have to shrink all content that’s displayed ( what would be possible because of the added pixels ) to add more complications to the watch face.
But this would impact readability.

I ordered an ultra mostly excited about strength and screen size (hazardous job, not adventurer). However, I think there is an increasing cha ce I will return it. I’ll take it into an apple store and compare against the normal ones and see.
Wouldn’t bother with a S8 though, if I return the ultra I’ll eBay a secondhand steel s7 for much cheaper as can’t see the point of the 8 for me (upgrading from a 4)
