I’m very confused as well :)

The way I understand it, if you buy from an Apple store and pay full price, you’re basically buying an unlocked phone. At least that’s what Apple’s website tells me.

But I’m getting mixed signals in this thread, so I’m starting to doubt going trough with it. Maybe just play it safe and buy one here in Europe for 200 dollars (sigh) more, only to be 100 % sure it is unlocked and will work.

When did buying a phone get this complicated...
Part of it, is that the iPhone XR is not yet available "SIM-Free" in the USA. You MUST select a carrier. The iPhone Xs was available SIM free at launch in USA, which is actually a bit unusual for Apple. And it is available SIM free in some other countries already, including in Belgium. Just not USA yet.

So, if you want to wait for a true "SIM-Free" model, that will definitely "Work" in Belgium. Warranty, is a whole other matter. Frankly, I'd just pay the $200 for that alone.

Yes, I think you’re right. Saving 200 bucks right now, but not having any warranty when something goes wrong after a few months... I’d be banging my head against the wall.

Thanks!

It’s getting clear to me that it should normally work out fine.

I’m still on the fence, though, as I figured that buying an American iPhone to use overseas also implies that I won’t have any warranty on it (unless I travel back to the US when something’s wrong with my phone - but that seems like a stretch).

But that’s a whole other issue than simlock, off course. I greatly appreciate all the input!
I thought Apple offered international warranty so that shouldn’t be a problem. One thing is you may get longer warranty in your country by law.

EU law states that the minimal warranty period should be 2 years. So in that case I'm still losing 1 year of warranty. Is this worth 200 dollars, is the question...

And I'm also thinking about resell value, as it'll be a US version and not an EU one. Even though it's only missing one LTE band that's almost not in use in Europe, it might still limit resell value in the end?

Warranty terms are here: https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ios-warranty-document-us.html

Including:

"Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."

and "Service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. Service options, parts availability and response times may vary according to country. You may be responsible for shipping and handling charges if the Apple Product cannot be serviced in the country it is in. If you seek service in a country that is not the original country of purchase, you will comply with all applicable import and export laws and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges"

Plus, as OP points out Consumer Law only applies to items actually purchased there so that's another possible benefit.

Use the 200 you save and buy Apple Care+, you get better coverage, and stiill should be cheaper.
